Advice on Running lights

Like lots of people I’m having to run in the dark at the moment. I usually keep to well lit areas and always wear reflective gear.

This morning I took a different route, the path was a bit darker and I took a huge tumble over a dropped kerb I hadn’t seen.

I think it’s time to get some proper lights!
It would be great to get some recommendations- what do I need to have a better chance of seeing where I’m going?

A head torch might be your best bet as the light will point to where you are looking.

Swearwolf · 26/11/2024 10:51

Head torch is good, but possibly uncomfortable- mine annoys me unless it's winter and I'm wearing a hat with it.

I have one of these: https://amzn.eu/d/ibVExRD
It's pretty great! You can angle the light to point more or less downwards. There is a light on the back and reflective straps so you're more visible to cars. Only downside is if you get hot and want to take a layer off you have to take the light off first. But it's getting colder so that's less of an issue.

Thanks both.
l have tried a head torch in the past, but found it pretty annoying.
Swearwolf, I think that’s more what I’m looking for. I didn’t realise you could angle the light on those sort of sets, that sounds really useful

I have the same as @Swearwolf

I run in a t shirt and vvv thin running jacket. I can manage to unzip, get my arms out of it and tie it around my middle without taking the light off 😂 It would probably be easier to stop for a few seconds!

Mummyslittlegiraffe · 26/11/2024 11:31

I have an older version of this, had it 10+ years I think. Comfortable and good for visibility as well as being able to see.

I have a chest light it's comfortable to wear but my one is a bit shit! But I think I'd find a head torch uncomfortable

I notice how poor the street lighting is when I'm running, and often end up running in the road (obviously not main roads) because it's a smoother surface and often easier to see where you're going

Sorry this doesn't help you at all!

Does anyone have recommendations for arm band lights? More for being seen that seeing, but a bit of both

BarnacleBeasley · 26/11/2024 12:49

I use knuckle lights, and I find they give much better depth perception than a single head or chest torch, because there are two of them. More comfortable than a head torch too, and doesn't dazzle people coming the other way!

I also get two of those reflective cycling armbands with led lights in and wear them round my waist.

Stumpedasatree · 26/11/2024 13:43

Chest torch much better than head torch for me, I have similar to the one from Amazon posted above.

FeelinTwentySixPointTwo · 28/11/2024 12:36

Can't bear chest torches. The Alpkit head torches that you can adjust up and down, and adjust the beam as well, are brilliant. I find these much lighter and comfortable than most on the market. Have previously had Decathlon ones I found clunky.

Clevs · 28/11/2024 12:44

I wear one of these. It has white LEDs on the front and red in the back. Three different levels of brightness plus flashing. It doesn't light up where I go really but makes me visible.

I also wear a head torch to light up where I'm going. I run with a club and everyone else's seems to be brighter with a wider beam than mine so I perhaps didn't do my research enough before buying. It has three different brightnesses, can be angled and has a red light on the back.

I contemplated buying a chest one but thought it would bounce around too much. I also couldn't find one that didn't come with its own strap/harnesss and I'd already bought the harness shown so didn't want to waste money on another one.

That's all I wear apart from high viz clothing.

I much prefer a chest light to a head torch for comfort, but the light isn't quite as effective as a head torch. But I find it gives off enough light for in-town or on pavement running. I wouldn't rely on it for night time trail running though.

PoshCoffee · 28/11/2024 12:50

I use a Proviz chest torch. I can’t cope with a head torch so this is the perfect solution for me. I also got one of their reflective running jackets. No one can miss me now!

Hivishero26 · 28/11/2024 13:14

Head torch for trail running (avoid the low branches) and chest torch for road running. Mine is decathlon- it lasts for ages and can be angled down and forward to help you see the path ahead.

SingingSands · 28/11/2024 13:22

I recommend the one @Swearwolf shared - it is really good.

The pavements round me are pretty bad due to massive trees planted at the roadsides - their roots cause such a hazard and you just can't see them in the dark.
