Runners and size of shoes - do you go a whole size or half a size up?

My feet do swell during a long run and are pretty difficult to buy shoes for. I've just bought a new pair of Asics in half a size larger for road running (I also trail run) but they feel quite roomy when trying on around the house - not sure whether to exchange them for my actual size? It's so hard to predict how they will feel after 10 miles.

My feet are so annoying. They apparently have grown from a size 6 to a 7 over the years too.

Varies by make and, more annoyingly, by shoes. I appreciate that isn't helpful! As a general pattern though I aim for half a size for short distances and a full size for anything over 10 miles.

Chattenoire · 11/11/2024 15:43

It really varies... But for me it's 1 to 1.5 sizes larger

Stumpedasatree · 11/11/2024 15:44

Trouble is I'm 5foot nothing and have skinny legs with great big boats at the end of them if I go a whole size up 😂

I had to go up a full size in ASICS and saucony.
If you are running no one is noticing the size of your feet 😁

Onewildandpreciouslife · 11/11/2024 16:10

I went a half size up and they felt fine until I ran a marathon, when I realised a full size would have been much better! And have stuck with a full size ever since

StripyTrousers · 11/11/2024 16:14

I go up a half size in the ASICS, but only
go up to a 10km distance.

Trickedbyadoughnut · 11/11/2024 16:32

Up a full size in New Balance, Hoka and Salomon, only half a size in Brooks.

Bear in mind that brands won't be based on UK sizing - i.e. the original sizing on Salomon is European, Brooks is American, Mizuno Japanese, so the UK size given on the box is usually whichever is nearest to the UK equivalent, but can vary quite a bit

SensitiveOverthinker · 11/11/2024 16:41

Go a whole size up! I ran marathon earlier this year! X

MrsPostmanPat · 11/11/2024 16:46

I go up half a size but know of someone who goes up 2 sizes.

Musicalmistress · 11/11/2024 16:48

Depends on the make and model - my current brooks I had to go up a size and a half to get the right fit for longer runs.

Yourinmyspot · 11/11/2024 16:52

As someone said above, it varies between makes and models! I generally go a full size up in most. I went a full size up in Hoka’s and Asics and a size and a half in my current pair of Saucony’s.

dammit88 · 11/11/2024 16:56

I do a whole size. Ive learned from many a missing toenail!

BogRollBOGOF · 11/11/2024 17:28

3 sizes 😂

I'm a size 2 and run in wide 5s!

Going from size 4 to 5 (at the running shop's advice) helped end my achilles tendonitis.

Whyherewego · 11/11/2024 17:29

Tends to be a whole size. Who cares what they look like !

Fireworkwatcher · 11/11/2024 17:32

I go half a size and buy men’s size 6.5 rather than women’s as they are wider . Can never find women’s wide shoes- might be worth trying men’s shoes

Wehadabetamax · 11/11/2024 17:58

I wear Brooks and go up 1.5 sizes.

MagpiePi · 11/11/2024 18:09

I have to go up 1 size in Brooks. Half a size is fine for one foot but the second toe on the other foot is longer and needs the full size.
They reckon you shoud have your thumb width between the end of your longest toe and the end of the shoe.

Mysterian · 11/11/2024 18:12

I did the questionnaire on the Brooks website and they said I should go a size up. They were right. The new shoes don't fit like gloves. More like well fitting shoes.

GreenSmithing · 11/11/2024 20:51

In Asics I go up a full size. For 10k a half size would probably be enough, but I've learned that for hm I need to go a sizs larger.

I agree that I've never looked at a runner and thought 'their shoes look too big'!

boxcar · 11/11/2024 20:57

Whichever gives me a finger width of room in the toes.

museumum · 11/11/2024 20:59

I wear a 3.5 in dress shoes, a 4 in casual trainers or boots for wearing with warm socks, and always a 4.5 in running shoes. I have run a lot over many years and never lost a toenail.

soupmaker · 11/11/2024 21:02

I go up a whole size in Asics. Half a size in Nike runners. I'm not doing longer than 15k though.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 11/11/2024 21:06

I always wear size 9 running shoes (Brooks).

My non-running shoes range in size from 7.5 to 9.5 depending on manufacturer.

Stumpedasatree · 11/11/2024 21:19

Brilliant, thanks everyone. I’ll stick with these half a size up ASICS ones as they feel pretty big when not running so sure they’ll be okay. They’re a bigger fit than my Brooks which are comfortable.

I don't run, but I always buy a half size up in trainers, regardless of brand. They need to expand when your feet get hot.
