Anyone had a stress fracture from running?

I have a stress fracture (Fibula) from running.

It came on suddenly and I find it really concerning as I hadn’t made any massive changes, wasn’t doing an excessive amount of running or anything crazy.
I’m just so worried it’s just going to happen again.

Anyone had any experience?

Can I ask what your symptoms were, as I’ve had an electric shock type pain in my upper front shin when I walk or exercise, and I can’t work out what it is. I’m wondering if it’s a slight fracture.

Yes I have, I had physio who recommended doing strength training to build up muscle in my glutes and quads to take the pressure off my feet. He also looked at my running style and helped me to improve, I make sure I have running shoes that support me well and touch wood other than a genuine tumble during a run resulting in a fracture a few years ago all has been fine. 10 years since the stress fracture

Yes, also fibula. It’s supposedly healed but I’m still in a lot of pain. I had an mri and they found a big cyst in the fibula which they thought might have weakened it so had surgery to remove the cyst. Though apparently I now have a hole in the bone 🤷‍♀️. Leg still hurts, I struggle walking. I do keep tearing my peroneal tendon so don’t know if that’s causing the pain. They’ve told me I can run again which is laughable as I can barely walk. Haven’t run in 6 years.

i was only running 5-7 k a couple of times a week.

Yes, I've had a couple over the years, but not for a while. It usually happens when you build up mileage too quickly.
For me, strength work and yoga now helps to fend them off, as the muscles are now taking more of the load rather than my joints.
I run 30+ miles a week and haven't had a stress fracture in the past five years or so.

Puravida23 · 13/10/2024 17:09

Yes I have also had one 3 years ago. I blame over running on pavement.
Nothing since but I do make sure I don't run too much in one week and like to do trail running if possible.
I also had my running gait/style fully analysed to make sure it wasn't my running style as well as upping my calcium/vitamin D supplements and making sure I have good trainers

Yes! A bad fracture to the tibia. Consultant said they had only seen fractures like it in ballet dancers 😳

EnfysHeulenEira · 13/10/2024 18:32

Yes. I had started couch to 5k and joined a running group's basic plan and was so slow that I had 1-1 'coaching' with a leader and we ran 5k whilst I was 21stone. I couldn't walk for weeks. We lived in the attic room and I had 3 flights of stairs to the front door and 1 stair to the bathroom. I just wanted to cry!

I had stress fractures in both legs and I honestly it was hideous

My orthopedic consultant said it was some sort of toxic triad of being female, middle aged and a bit overweight…..combine that with increasing distance too quickly causes problems.

BoxOfChoc · 13/10/2024 22:43

Thanks all

I guess I increased my distance a bit this year but not crazy, and I’ve been doing a decent amount of running consistently for a few years…..

I have been running more on roads than trails due to working from a different location this year …..

I do weights / strength stuff

Those who recovered fully from stress fracture, did you walk at all during first 6 weeks of recovery period?

Quite a few of our club have had them. Usually hip and pelvis and all those ladies have had one in each side over the years. All very fit long distance runners. All back running 6-12 months.

one is out with a distal fib stress fracture, she’s due to be back running by Christmas.

The Irishphysio on instagram specialises in runner and rehab physio. Definitely have a look at his stuff. He’s great for advice.
