Pain when running - 5 months postpartum

I’m 5 months postpartum, during pregnancy I suffered badly with the PGP from 16 weeks and as a result hadn’t exercised much. Before this I pretty regularly ran 30+ miles per week for over 10 years. I had a csection so only started running again 6 weeks ago.

Since starting running again Im finding it really painful, I’m getting pain in the places impacted by the PGP and in my pelvis. Is this normal? Can any other exercises or strengthening help? I’m trying to build up slowly currently managing 3 x 5ks per week.

Im not breastfeeding so expected my ligaments to have gone back to normal now.

It's normal to have pain after bad SPD, yes. You need to get some physio and build up strength in the parts of your body that support your pelvis.

I had it via the NHS because my SPD was so bad - I think I started it at six months post partum? I had a very lovely and knowledgeable woman who I worked with every two weeks for a few months, going through exercises and finding what bits of me needed help. Lots of squats and resistance bands. I'm much, much better now (five years later) but I do still get twinges and my strength isn't what it was - I do my physio again when I start to get pain. And I cannot climb over things anymore. Also steep hills sometimes hurt.

I know the 'mummy MOT' private appointments are similar because the woman I saw does then as well. Good luck getting it sorted! I wouldn't push yourself running, you'd be better off doing strength-building exercises until you're seen by a specialist.

I had SPD with DC2 and it took 2 years for the pain to completely disappear after he was born. My GP referred me to physio too.

I saw an osteopath for the same thing and he was brilliant. Realigned everything and gave me exercises to strengthen the area. It worked wonders for me
