Is yoga going to help? (age 58)

I’m just starting to get stiff - have never been particularly flexible or supple, but not it is so that if I squat down I have trouble getting up- argh! What will help me? Will yoga help? Is there a you tube one I could start with?

Look up Tom Morrison on YouTube and particularly the SMM stuff. Well worth purchasing but if you do start with the regressions, it’s a lot harder than it looks!
he has two types of people he works with, one group tends to be bodybuilders and cross fitters who have knackered their bodies, and the other group (ie me) are the ‘more mature’ group who, just like you, feel things are just stiffening up with age.

focus is on alignment and working on all muscle groups, the hip flexibility is a game change though ( and actually not that difficult)

Yes absolutely! Many excellent beginner practices on YouTube. Adrienne is fabulous. Make sure you take it slow, don’t do anything that hurts. If you are doing a stretch and it feels too much, back off a little , breathe and ease into it. Enjoy!

He has loads of stuff on YouTube that doesn’t need purchasing I should say, but does provide a program which addresses all the problem areas, think it’s about £60 one off purchase

Yes Tom Morrison is excellent. Adriene is good too - very gentle and easy.

Maybe also see if there’s a local class you can go to? Good yoga teachers will offer adaptations to postures depending on how much you can do, & it’s more fun in a group.

Also, yoga is about what you can do, not about what the rest of the class can do, so don’t worry about that.

Yes, it will, but I also highly recommend pilates in addition. Yoga (especially group classes) can encourage the over-extension of joints, which you need to be protecting.
Pilates will strengthen your joints and your core so that maintain a solid fitness and counter wear & tear.
