How to get discounts on membership of David Lloyd gym for swimming

Hi,

I wondered if anybody might know if it is possible to get discounted membership of David Lloyd Gyms in order to go swimming?

I would really like to join for several reasons:

  1. Because I am home schooling my son, who is out of school due to anxiety. He can't yet swim and really needs to practise.

  2. The gym has an outdoor heated swimming pool which would really help. My immune system has been really low since having covid and I have to wear an n95 mask when I go to indoor places or else I catch gastro bugs literally every time. So the outdoor heated swimming pool would really help a lot.

We do have council swimming pools but they are all either indoor or else unheated outdoor pools which I really wouldn't manage in winter.

I know there are lessons my son could go to, but he is ASD and very anxious and going to lessons without me isn't an option right now. Also he really does need time to just enjoy being in a pool in order to get really solid at swimming, without being told what to do all the time by an instructor.

I rang up the David Lloyd gym and asked about the fee to join. It turned out that if we just went swimming once a week we would be paying £50 per swim, and also a joining fee of £180, which is eyewateringly expensive.

I just wondered if anybody might know if there are discounts or things that would get us cheaper membership?

Thanks!

Near us there are two hotels with pool and gym that offer swim and health club membership for £35 a month peak time. Kids times are restricted but not too bad, and your ds may count as an adult soon anyway if yr 10. They are indoor but basically empty whenever we go!

At DL although they advertised the outdoor pools, our are rarely open as they don't have enough lifeguards. They are never open to kids in winter and only occasionally in summer - even the last amazing hot day they closed to kids due to lack of lifeguards

Thanks, that's really helpful to know.

@SocksFellOff I'm an outdoor swimmer, and I make an effort to swim outdoors ever time I am in a new place. I am mostly a "wild" swimmer, but there are lots of lidos/outdoor pools around.

If you let us roghly know where you live, we might be able to help.

Hi,

Thank you very much for posting. I do live 5 minutes walk from an outdoor unheated swimming pool, but I think I would freeze solid.

I just remembered that a primary school near us has a heated outdoor pool and I've written to ask if there is ever a time when we could swim in it.

If not, then I think it's back to the council pool, except with me comically trying to manage a mask while in the pool. And I thought wearing glasses was uncool - this would be a whole other level.

We love David Lloyd - but we go alot so tend to get value for money!
Are you saying you’re going to wear a face mask whilst swimming? I didn’t realise such thing existed

Ours offers an off peak price (after 2pm on a weekend). But think they also offer a blue light discount so worth checking if you or your partner work for an organisation that qualifies?
