Question about 'exercise snacking'

Wonderbug81 · 29/07/2024 14:46

I've been reading about exercise snacking (short bursts of activity through the day).

I thought you should only do exercise after warming up, is it Ok to just launch into these things (and then not cool down afterwards)?

I'm in my mid-forties in case that matters.

I understood it meaning doing 10 minutes of exercise throughout the day instead of one long session that's harder to fit into your day, I,e. 10 minutes walking here and there, getting up and doing some squats, some bicep curls while the kettle boils etc.

Thanks, there was an article in the Guardian that suggested 2-3 mins every few hours as a way of squeezing in exercise, but it didn't mention anything about warming up so I'm a bit confused.

I imagine it means doing an activity that does not require warming up. So one personal best deadlift attempt would not be sensible, but a few bodyweight squats or some planks, for example, would be fine.

Lunges, lots of lunges

It's about regular bouts of movement, it doesn't need to be intense enough to require a specific warm up, just moving and activating your muscles.

As someone above said bodyweight exercises would work. There's something called 'greasing the groove' where you do regular sub failure sets of an exercise e.g. push ups, throughout the day every day to increase the overall number you can do in one go.

Thanks all, this is really helpful. I thought warming up before exercise meant all kinds of exercise so good to know I can try this approach and slot it into my day instead!
