She Ultra Marathon April 12th 2025

Looking to find others who are doing this race.

It will be my first ultramarathon (and I haven't done a 1/2 or full marathon) and thought it might be nice to get a support group together for it and share our training and tribulations leading up to it

Hey. I'll be doing this.

It won't be my first ultra but the training and tribulations and need for support don't change and I'm happy to offer advice.

Are you looking forward to it? It's a lovely part of the world 😍

Ah fantastic, I knew there must be at least one other person here doing it!

I am following a plan I found online Marathon Handbook 50k ULTRA 'JUST FINISH' TRAINING PLAN , but I tore my meniscus about 6 months ago and it still twinges every now and then so I am doing the first few weeks twice to slowly build up the miles.

I am very much looking forward to it, I adore Wales and the scenery is going to be fantastic.

How many Ultras have you done? Did you do the She Ultra this year?

Me!

Just name changed for this thread Smile

I followed that plan for an Ultra I did in May. It is really good.

I was looking at accommodation for the Ultra but doesn't look like anything is book able yet.

SheepAreSuper · 06/08/2024 10:18

I followed the Marathon Handbook 'Just Finish' plan for the first ultra I did in '22. Worked perfectly.
It's definitely a good idea to work through the first few weeks of building multiple times if you're coming back from an injury.

I've done 4 ultra events (DNF'd my most recent last week 🫣).
I did the Pen Llŷn winter ultra last November which was beautiful but muddy and I was painfully undertrained
I didn't do the SheUltra this year but have loads of friends who did and loved it.

They did some webinars on kit and nutrition on the Get Up and Run Podcast YouTube channel earlier in the year that are really useful!

SheUltra · 06/08/2024 19:07

Oh thanks for that. I've just found the video on YouTube Smile

Welcome!

I've booked the Premier Inn about 40mins away (but I won't be driving!). I am going to look at closer options in a couple of months.

At the moment the furthest I have run is 11km, I did a 10 miler but it was about 15 years ago! Looking at She Runs to see if I can book with some of their trail runs.

Ah fab thanks for those webinars, I will have a look.

At the moment I am eyeing up the Harrier 10L as the Salmon adv 12 is a little out of my price range. Which race vest do you use?

Sorry to hear about the DNF, hope it wasn't injury.

Not doing that race but have recently gotten into ultras - first 50 miler coming up in September.

A few resources I found really useful:

  • Training Essentials for Ultra running by Jason Koop - a great introductory book
  • the Koopcast - a podcast by the author of the book above, featuring scientists, coaches and athletes in the ultra running space
  • the Science of Ultra podcast - again, a wealth of knowledge and research on the topic. No longer active but back catalogue remains available
  • Fueling Endurance podcast - specifically about nutrition, hydration and supplements
GoSummer676 · 07/08/2024 19:26

Thanks I’ve bookmarked those - not for me but DH as he’s done a couple of ultras and loves finding different podcasts - my limit is HM run my joints can’t take any more. Hope it goes well for you all

SheUltra · 07/08/2024 20:27

Ok so I have the Harrier 10l. I like it but I find that getting soft flasks in and out is fiddly. I use a bladder. Never got on with storing my (Harrier) poles on it either.

If you look on preloved sports I've discovered they have Harrier seconds/returns so cheaper!

SheUltra · 07/08/2024 20:29

@Libra19752 have you booked accommodation near the start or finish?

It's a linear route isn't it?

I've been fine with my Solomon Active Skin 4L for a 50k - do you expect to carry a lot of mandatory gear?

SheepAreSuper · 09/08/2024 11:40

@Libra19752
Thank you. DNF was down to ankle tendons seizing up so🤞just rest.

I use the Salomon Adv 12 with a pole quiver. It's comfy although feels quite bulky when loaded. If you can get to an outlet store they're a bit more reasonable but tbh it's falling apart after 18 months and chafes so I'm not sure I'd have another one.

I have the older model Decathlon Evadict 10 too which I love but the pockets on the front are limited so no weight distribution

Heard lots of good things about the Harrier packs.

@SheUltra it is linear and the reverse of the 2024 route so starts in Abersoch and finishes in Pwllheli. They're not far from each other and there are shuttles back. I'm campervanning near Abersoch.

Excited!!

Iamanunsafebuilding · 09/08/2024 12:32

The Harrier 10L Kinder is really good, I use my Salomon soft flasks in it. I did Race to the Stones 50k last month which was my first ultra and the Harrier vest was fab.

The pit stops at RTTS were really well stocked and I didn't need to carry any food, I did have some but didn't eat it. Always carry the mandatory kit though, you honestly don't know when you might need it. Even if it isn't mandatory it's still a good idea!

SheUltra · 09/08/2024 14:39

Thank you- I did go back and really look at the whole thing again.

Have booked a little b&b near the finish line. I hadn't realised what a touristy area it was so no deals to be had on youth hostels or whatever.

Anyway it's booked and I have a plan coming together Smile

Iamanunsafebuilding · 09/08/2024 19:06

Also, I entered RTTS having run plenty of halfs but never a marathon and I loved every minute of it! We didn't worry about our pace, we hiked the hills and stopped at every aid station. I can't wait to do another one and I'm looking at maybe a 50 miler next year, or even a 100k!

Also, strength training is your friend. I built it into my training plan and it's been a game changer for me both in my running and my recovery.

SheUltra · 09/08/2024 20:03

Yy to strength training. My gym membership has just come to an end and weirdly I have been more committed to my Caroline Girvan YouTube works outs since.

I am pretty good at 3 times a week - 35 mins. No faffing with kit either.

Yesterday I got home from work and just did on in my bra and a pair of shorts Grin. No way would I have bothered to actually go to the gym or attend a class.

Ooh I’ve just signed up for this today. Never done an ultra before so interested to see what the next few months entails. Should be a great experience ☺️
