Swimming hat?

I’m a regular gym goer but I’ve sprained my ankle. It’s slowly improving but can’t lift, do classes or even cycle comfortably yet.

im going to swim instead for a couple of weeks until I’m better. Thing is I know the chlorine will play havoc with my hair. Can anyone recommend an easy to put on hat?

Also does anyone wear those little pool socks? I’m worrying about slipping so thought I’d try them.

im going to look so glam aren’t I???!

I don’t wear a hat, hats aren’t intended to keep your hair dry anyway. I do soak my hair when I have pre swimming shower, not sure if it works but I always imagine it soaks up less chloriney water if it’s already soaked. I wear flip flops to prevent me slipping and just leave them at edge of pool.

Hats don't really keep your hair dry, although silicone ones are better than the Lycra ones, which just kept your hair out of the way.

I use a leave in swimming conditioner instead Aquaguard. It's expensive but lasts ages (been swimming twice a week since February, and still loads left, on bob length hair). I tried a hat over normal conditioner, but the hat just pops straight off.

By leave in I mean you swim with it on and wash out after - I then use an intensive conditioner. So far, so good.

Thanks. I colour my hair and the chlorine bleaches it out.

A well fitting silicon one keeps my hair pretty dry, even for a proper training session. Wetting it first in the shower helps and wash it as fast as you can afterwards.

Definitely silicone

I just wear sliders to get to and from pool

If hou swim with your head in the water a hat won't keep it perfectly dry. As PP says, soak your hair in tap water before putting the hat on. Already-wet hair won't absorb the pool water in the same way as dry hair.

Are you confident that swimming won't stress your ankle?

Restaurantcritic · 28/07/2024 21:26

I’m hoping ankle will be fine. Thanks for the ideas.

I wear ankle braces while swimming if I've recently sprained my ankle. It depends how seriously you swim, but I find it's not particularly kind to ankles. I'm in a permanent run-swim rotation depending on whether my shoulders or ankles hurt more. My physio keeps suggesting cycling and I keep ignoring her :D

Btw, everyone I know wears sliders for grip and because changing rooms and showers are nasty as well as cold under foot

Soulcap - keeps my hair 95% dry, just the bottom bit is damp. Really recommend.
