Are any yoga apps worth it?

I would like to start some sort of yoga or Pilates practice. I can’t commit to a gym or class and I don’t want to do more than 20 mins a day. I’d like to improve cote strength, flexibility, and be able to take my weight on my hands more. (At the moment if I do planks, my wrists give out before anything else.)

Are any of the apps worth it for something like this? I have no ambition to do handstands within a month or anything like that, but I am
susceptible to “gamefying” stuff like this so if there’s a good app I reckon I’d get on well with it.

Or is there no substitute for getting along to a class with a good teacher?

I just do videos on YouTube. Equally as good as the weekly classes I was doing.

Yoga with Kassandra is very good, far better than Adriene imo. K has given me more strength and muscle definition than A.
Fightmaster Yoga is also good, but probably best attempted after several months with Kassandra as I find they do make me work muscles I don’t often use.

For wrist strengthening, you would be better to work on that separately in addition to yoga

I meant to say, Kassandra has 10, 15 or 20 min videos, as well as longer ones,so you don’t have to do full hour long sessions.

I use an app called Down Dog.
You can customise the workout, difficulty level, style of yoga, time of workout, focus area etc. very good video & oral explanations of the moves.

Another vote for Down Dog. You can set the session length, difficulty, yoga style, areas of focus.

Third vote for Down Dog! It’s a really nice app and I like how you can customise every aspect of the practice.

I've been using Down Dog since lockdown and find it very good, it's not expensive about £30 a year I think?

colouringindoors · 19/10/2024 12:46

Just looking into these... any more recommendarions?

tunainatin · 19/10/2024 12:55

I use one called 'yoga for weight loss' which I really like as it has 30 day programmes of 10 mins each and just makes it simple and easy to follow, regardless of whether you want to lose weight. However, I have previously done a lot of yoga with a teacher so I know the postures and how they should feel, how to make sure I'm aligned etc. I don't think it would be a good idea to go straight to an an app.

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 19/10/2024 13:05

I have an app called bend which is yin yoga really. Stretches that you hold rather than changing poses all the time. I think I pay about 20 quid a year for it. I like that there is no music and there are some sequences already. You can make your own playlist.

Strokethefurrywall · 19/10/2024 13:25

Another vote for Down Dog. Been using it for 5+ years, I'm going through a yoga free phase right now but it's brilliant.

The only app I've ever done a review for!

KatRee · 19/10/2024 13:37

Also DownDog - I first got it during lockdown and only pay around 5.99 a month. I think it's really good value. They also have other apps at no extra cost, like I'm using their prenatal one at the moment and they just launched a Pilates one too

MrTwatchester · 19/10/2024 13:40

Down Dog is brilliant, and unbelievable value. I use the yoga and HIIT apps (the meditation one is good too, but I'm shite at meditation so rarely use it). Haven't tried the Pilates one yet, but I'll probably give it a go.

Can you use the Down dog app on a computer?

quirkychick · 19/10/2024 16:44

I use Boho Beautiful, but try out the free videos on YouTube first. They have lots of different types of yoga, meditation and pilates, recently new teachers added with breathwork, hatha, tapping. On the app you can search for type of yoga and length.

Yes

DOROteeaitchwhy · 07/11/2024 16:14

I use apple fitness for yoga. As a bonus it gives me hiit sessions too. There are 10,20,30, and 40 min sessions and you can choose from slow flow or fast flow. Each session has modifiers if you don't feel able to do what instructor does. It helps that I have an Apple Watch, so am motivated to close my exercise ring every day.

I love the Down Dog app. It is fantastic value. I think I paid less than £20 for the year. I mainly do vinyasa, yin and hatha yoga on there, but I also like gentle and restorative yoga in the evening. All the apps are included in your subscription. The pilates app is really good as well.
