Live alone and run in the evenings?

I've recently started living on my own for the first time in a long time and I just got in from an evening run and it occurs to me that nobody knew I was out. Do others who live alone let someone know if they go out for a run/long walk? Just in case of accident or something worse I suppose - so someone knows to check in on you. It just hasn't occurred to me before now, am I overthinking it?

Do you use Strava? Most apps have a safety text setting that texts someone of your choice and they can track you. I normally get a beacon text from Strava sent to my daughter.

Abracadabra12 · 23/05/2024 21:33

I live alone and have never thought to do that

Haggisfish3 · 23/05/2024 21:34

I have strava and also would use the beacon text function. Sends a text to your nominated people to say you have set off and when you return.

Isitchill · 23/05/2024 21:36

I always let my mum know when I was leaving, where I was going and I'd tell her when I got back.

Even now I tell my teens roughly what route I'm taking.

crampleftleg · 23/05/2024 21:37

I don't have strava. I'm pretty old school and just wear an ancient digital watch. I might have to drag myself into the 21st century.

No, sounds a bit ridiculous to me, an adult texting their mum every time they go for a walk and get home again

Pigeonqueen · 23/05/2024 21:44

It wouldn’t occur to me to do this. If you get yourself an Apple Watch it will ring emergency services if it detects a fall and will ring emergency contacts if you need it to. The better specs don’t even need phone signal to send an sos.

I just think it's because it was lateish and running is a bit more high risk than a gentle stroll. It just occurred to me that nobody would miss me until I don't turn up at work tomorrow morning.

Sadly I'm definitely not in a position to drop a few hundred quid on an Apple Watch right now. But that's interesting to know that they have that function.

My Garmin running watch has this feature too and it's from the lower end of their range- about £140 a couple of years ago I think.

Isitchill · 23/05/2024 22:22

chick It's more ridiculous to not let someone know where you're going for a run. I'd like to think that if I got hurt they'd know where to look.

Chocolateteabag · 23/05/2024 23:08

Local running club?
Mine meets twice a week 7-8 but then informal meet ups rest of the week depending on what type of running you are in to (fell, road etc)

Everintroverte · 23/05/2024 23:41

Don't necessarily need a fancy watch for Strava, it will work from a smart phone if you have one.

SherrieElmer · 24/05/2024 00:05

Lovely, you may have an accident at any moment, not only while you are running. Thinking that way means you'll always stay indoors, as accidents aren't limited to running

SilentRetreat · 24/05/2024 00:48

I use Strava beacon text so my sister gets a notification and can track my run.

MiddleAgedDread · 24/05/2024 07:48

No but I always take my phone

User364837 · 24/05/2024 07:50

Are you on a route where someone would be likely to come across you if you fell? I think that makes a difference

TBH I dont think a gentle stroll is less high risk then running....depending on where you are doing it!
Where I live I wouldnt worry that nobody would find me if I fell, rather that somebody would attack me! (why I dont tend to go out at night much).
Ive lived alone all my adult life, it has literally never occurred to me to tell someone where Im going to be.
I think at this point Im resigned to being found because of a strange smell coming from my house, or by a random dog walker!! LOL😂

blobby10 · 24/05/2024 09:01

It depends on where you run tbh - I live on my own too and if I'm going for a walk with the dog (not a guard or protective dog of any sort)or walk around the housing estate then of course I wouldn't tell anyone. However when I was going our for 20+ mile bike rides then I sent a strava beacon to my parents who live only a few miles away and occasionally one of my children if they were home. I had a garmin for my bike with an 'incident alert' function on it which sent an emergency text to my dad if the bike hit the ground - unfortunately I accidentally set the bloody thing off so many times that I've had to disable it 😂

crampleftleg · 24/05/2024 22:11

Thanks for replying everyone. It's good to get different perspectives! I'm going to look into strava. And then work out who should get the alert if I hit the deck...

meh, I live with other people & don't really give them this kind of info. Not least because I often change my mind last minute about where I'm going.
