Running after Labral tear repair

I have a labral tear diagnosed via MRI in 2022. I don't know when exactly it happened but it started hurting when I (re)took up running after having my first baby, didn't get better with physio. The only thing that helped was stopping running altogether.

I've since had about 2 years off running (I didn't have surgery back in 2022 as I knew pregnancy 2 was imminent) but just completed c25k with no problems. Until I did parkrun yesterday and today the pain is back.

I really want to get this sorted so I can run again. I love running and it's my "me" time, I have done marathons in the past. Has anyone out there had a labral tear repair and been able to run again successfully? I would only have the surgery to allow me to run, as I can avoid the pain by not running. I also obviously have 2 young children so the downtime will be difficult.

No. Sorry. Not the answer you’re looking for but hopefully a straight answer is constructive. I completely empathise with both your pain and desire to avoid surgery - I now can’t run because of a knee injury and in that boat. Unfortunately with a labral tear surgery is the only answer - the labrum can’t repair itself. It has to be debrided in order to address the pain. Physio can help minimally to build the muscles around but thats not the full solution. I had surgery several years ago and, if memory serves me correctly, I was off both crutches within a month. Hard with kids, I know.

Appreciate the response thank you!
Going to get a physio referral alongside a consultant appointment this week to decide next steps.

Hi I just wanted to ask, how long ago you had the surgery? And what type of surgery it was? Also do get any issues now with your hip? I heard surgery was something you had to keep redoing?

Hello, so I think you weren't asking me but mine has not ended up being my labral tear causing me issues. It was seen on the MRI so I definitely have one but having now seen an amazing physio it's my lower back seizing up causing pain elsewhere. I'm potentially getting a referral to a spinal specialist but seeing how it's going for now.
The physio said that labral tear issues are often over diagnosed as so many people actually have tears causing no issues, probably like mine.
All the best!

Hi thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly. I will see what the consultant says at my next appointment. Glad your hip pain wasn’t a labrum tear. Best wishes with the spine issue

Hi there, hope you don’t mind me following up but wanted to ask whether you opted for the surgery in the end? I was recommended surgery for same thing but opted for physio as couldn’t bear the downtime with three young kids and not being able to drive. Two years later, the pain is much worse. Not sure what to do. I did read that surgery isn’t always effective and wonder if it will be less so for me as have left it even longer…thank you

Hello! Sorry just seen this.
So I do have a tear for sure, but seeing a great physio she did some work on my back and it fixed my issue. I had a really immobile sacrum and it was manifesting in a muscle deeper in my hip.
I guess the consultant saw the tear (which isn’t too uncommon to have) and assumed that was the cause of the pain.
so I didn’t have the surgery as didn’t need it. Hope you manage to get it resolved
