Not recovering fast enough interval running

northernmamax · 02/05/2024 16:17

I've started running, totally influenced by the London marathon hype.

It's highlighted just how unfit I am and im only 26. Not very overweight just carrying a bit of baby still.

Im doing the couch to 5K and im just not recovering fast enough between the run and the walk - im so so out of breath by about the 5th running interval and im not even going that fast! My pace is between 8-9 mins per km 🐢 week 1 was a breeze but week 2 is killing me off

Starting to think I'm just not cut out for this as it's not my muscles or legs that are tiring me, it's my breath. Any tips? Is this normal at the stage I'm at?

Slow down! Even if it’s 11/12 minutes per km

CatherineMaitland · 02/05/2024 17:52

I would do the running intervals more slowly.

ArghhWhatNext · 02/05/2024 17:55

Run slower and breathe in for for steps, out for four steps, keeping your breathing in a manageable rhythm.

LividAA · 02/05/2024 18:00

You’re going too fast.

Doesn’t matter how slow the clock says it is, if it’s too fast it’s too fast.

cinnamonbiscuit · 02/05/2024 18:09

From my experience of doing couch to 5k, I absolutely hate weeks 2-5 for this reason, but I push through and then it's fine. But definitely slow down as pp are saying!

Trainbother · 02/05/2024 18:10

Yes, you will be going too fast. Beginners runners always do.

Slow down, don't worry, and maybe get your iron levels checked if eg you have heavy periods or it doesn't get easier - I started running in my 50s, and really found it hard and then discovered I was pretty anaemic! I was doing plenty of other exercise but running was where it really showed up.

I already feel like I'm going so slow, if I go any slower I'll be walking 🤣 I'll deffo try this tomorrow though. Thanks everyone. Will let you know how I get on

Just keep trying! Slow down on the running bits, but don’t give up. I regularly run long-distances now but the hardest period of my running was getting up to 5km. You’re in the thick of the difficult bit, it does get easier and even enjoyable I promise!!

Running isn't fast walking though! It is a different thing, both feet are off the ground at the same time and it has a different impact on your body. I can easily walk faster than I run if I put my mind to it, especially if restarting after injury or illness. Slow down till it is challenging but not awful and then build up slowly......

WhatsitWiggle · 03/05/2024 23:21

Definitely slow down! When I started, I absolutely could walk faster than run, and I felt I was almost jogging on the spot! That's not the point though, you need your body to use your muscles differently and as you build up stamina you'll be able to run for longer, and then increase your speed.

Also, are you running outside? It's still chilly, and I found my lungs do not like the cold at all. I can run for much longer indoors on a treadmill because I'm not breathing in cold air.

northernmamax · 04/05/2024 10:58

I am going to give it a go today.

I am running outside yes! I do think I am going to the gym to try a treadmill run though as it's miserable today. I did find I did my best run in the rain though last week!

I'll let you know how I get on. Thanks for the advice everyone :)
