I need to learn how to run

I can't keep up with my DC and having trouble sprinting for the bus when the train is late! But how?
Is there a way to stop your belly and insides wobbling? Do I need some elaborate type of bandage? How do you manage to run without needing to wee? And without your insides falling out? How to you make yourself go out when you're still exhausted and in pain from the previous time? DH helpfully informs me you need to go three times a week to stay the same fitness level or more to improve. Do you chug painkillers if you run often? As every time I have tried, I've been in agony for days afterwards and I've never even managed to "run" for more than about 20 seconds at a time.

You'll get about 10000 people saying this but have you tried a couch to 5k? It eases you in gently and gives you tips on technique as you go along.
Also invest in a good sports bra and good shoes- they don't have to be expensive they just have to fit well.
If I've not been for a while I do get achey but your body soon gets used to it.

Get some tummy control leggings in the right size and start really slowly. You won't go far or fast for a long time but you will slowly improve your resistance. If you're out of breath you're running too fast for you so slow down. Once you can control your breathing running will be easy and it's great fun. Maybe do c25k or something to start off? You shouldn't wee while you run if you go to the toilet before you go, if so maybe some pelvic floor exercises before you go.

I am mid 50s and nearly passed out having to run for a train just before Christmas.

I downloaded the couch 2 10k app and have just run 20 mins non stop after 5 weeks of following the app.

It's not easy the first few times but your endurance will build and if you are like me will feel so much better for it.

Couch 2 5k , start off running slowly, then go slower. It’s not sports day and you don’t need to sprint. Look at your local running club and see if they do a c25k course , then you’ll be with lots of people who have the same questions and insecurities and you’ll all support each other.

Don't run. Find another exercise that doesn't hurt and that you enjoy. If running makes you miserable, you won't do it consistently enough for it to have an impact

Brisk walking with an audio book, swimming, cycling, classes ... Experiment a bit until you find what suits you

leavesrfalling · 29/04/2024 20:30

Definitely download the NHS couch to 5k app and follow it. Start off really slowly so that you don't get out of breath too quickly. Invest in some decent trainers

This. I've tried running many times as a fitness endeavour and failed each time. There's nothing about it I enjoy, not one bit.

Put me on a mountain with the dog and I'll hike for ten hours, no problem. Swimming, another yes. Rollerskating, another big yes.

You don't have to take up running to be 'able' to run for short necessary periods, like catching a bus. You just need to be fit, which you can achieve 100 different ways, doing something you like.

juicelooseabootthishoose · 29/04/2024 20:50

I'd build up more slowly. Perhaps once you are able to walk briskly for an hour without pain and being out of breath you could try running again. And do the much recommended couch to 5k. But like previous posters it sounds more like you want to be fit enough to run for a bus. Not necessarily become a runner. And there are loads of ways to get fit-you choose whatever weapon you enjoy. Dancing, walking,
Swimming, cycling, strength training etc

BogRollBOGOF · 29/04/2024 22:22

C25k, and slow it down. There's no PE teacher to mock you for your speed.

High waisted leggings and pant liners. My baby-trashed system has learned to cope with the impact with experience.

It is worth being able to run with children.

Try reading Run Like A Girl. About a 30s woman who starts from scratch with running. Very down to earth. Or just do what I did and ditch running in favour of strength training - kuch quicker results and you don't knacker your knees up.

I must admit, I'm the same. I try every spring and fail! I already have decent shoes and bra.

You shouldn't wee while you run if you go to the toilet before you go, if so maybe some pelvic floor exercises before you go.
Tried that, also not drinking bar half a glass of water when I wake up. It's the bouncing, I think. Same as hiking downhill always makes me need a wee. I'm always so thirsty then and get such a dry throat when out that I can't swallow.

I need to do something. And it needs to be free.

You shouldn't need to wee when you exercise - you sound like you really need to up your game on the pelvic floor exercises

Are you overweight ? It makes things much much harder

Strength build - lots of online videos you can do - do a months of that before coach to 2.5k

Add stretches after every workout

Add in online yoga on the days you are not weight training

It will take time

There are different types of exercise pain - the one that says "stop now" and the one that says "we are seriously getting better "

Always do something every day - you will lose the post exercise pain quicker that way - so aching from weight, do a round of yoga and sone extra stretches and go for a walk and it will feel better

I've been a runner for many years, my advice would be don't worry about running all the way, if you have to walk then do. If you need a wee pop behind a bush (but I live in the country so might be a bit easier). Get yourself some good upbeat music and play this before you go out, it will help motivate you to get out of the door. Certain songs will become your running songs and will psychologically prepare you for going out. Have fun 😊!

Ask your GP for a physio referral re your stress incontinence/pelvic floor.

This YouTube clip got me running when I thought previously I couldn't. The right technique makes a huge difference IME.
