I'm thinking of buying a stepper exercise machine.

I have hopefully added a photo.

It's cheap, doesn't take up much space.
I just want to burn calories for weight loss.

I'm not going to go to the gym. You Tube videos are ok but I thought I could stand in this and move while watching TV

Is this a stupid idea?

I'm thinking of buying a stepper exercise machine.

It's so kind of you to take such a persistent interest in my quest to get fit.

or more likely to make you see that the main obstacle is you’re looking for excuses. Honestly… you don’t want to go out to exercise because you don’t want to miss a single minute with your adult child before they fly the nest!!

Which is why I asked for opinion on a small exercise machine.
That seemed a simple question.

If you think it's going to be the miracle cure, get it then 🤷‍♀️

florenceandthemac · 06/04/2024 01:38

Just get the stepper.

And update us in a few months

I have an aerobics step, I just go on and off of it, back and forth, sideways ect. while watching a film or youtube but think I'll get a walking pad instead so I have something to hold for balance. There are some cheap ones on amazon.

I don't know why everyone is being so down on this bit of kit in particular. If the OP is able to use it while watching TV, and actually uses it because it fits in with her lifestyle, then it's 100x better than any other piece of equipment that she doesn't use, or not buying anything and saying 'go for a walk instead' - when she can't find the time to actually do that, so doesn't!?

Yep, this. It's no good advising a larger piece of kit if she doesn't have space, or going out for a run / to the gym / up and down stairs if she wants to spend her precious free time with her family.

I had one of these back in the 80s, used to do it for about 20 minutes a day. It made quite a difference, really got my heart rate up. The only similar thing with a tiny footprint is a springy step - costs about the same - but you might as well have the step machine, as it forces you to make the climbing movement and you can adjust the height/resistance.

They're nowhere near as nice to use as the hydraulic ones at the gym, but very much smaller and cheaper!

GogAndMagog · 06/04/2024 03:23

I have a vertical climber. It's bloody fantastic, I get a full body cardio strength workout and my knees are ok (former runner)

I put my music on and it's a feel good adrenaline boost.

Give it a go!

I want to know where you work that allows you to do wrack up 60 hours a week every week!

I’m not quite sure where you find time or the energy to fit in exercise on top of that?

Italiandreams · 06/04/2024 07:34

And that’s the problem isn’t it, working 60 hour weeks isn’t uncommon, it’s why like has become such a juggle for many people, and why people are looking for simple ways to fit exercise in. I really relate to the OP, my circumstances are different but the struggle to fit it in is still there.

and no lunch break!

I love my mini stepper...Im actually on my second one!
I got one with the handles first but when it broke I just got the little one as its easier to store.
I use it twice a week for my pilates/cardio session (I have an exercise bike that I use three times for weights/cardio). I have a good routine and have been using them for well over a year now.

They are really handy bits of kit but I wouldnt say they are that great for watching tv with the family. Like most exercise equipment they will inevitably develop some sort of noise. I watch Netflix when Im on mine but I have to keep the subtitles on!

FlowerBarrow · 06/04/2024 10:23

I wish people would read the ops actual situation.
Yes, this will help compared with the alternative for you which is not doing any additional exercise. The gym, walking etc aren’t realistic alternatives and the stepper is a simple way of adding more movement to your day.
Also it’s a good and positive step (😂) for you to take towards a future journey of being more active
(Edited twice, how hard can it be to spell stepper??!!)

Italiandreams · 06/04/2024 10:30

I work 60 hour weeks and work through lunch. It’s really not unusual . Rubbish but not that unusual. The OP is looking for a creative way to exercise in her busy life, how about constructive suggestions rather than not believing what she is saying.

I would love some solutions to fit in exercise more easily, my children are young though, sorry OP well done for trying to make positive changes. I know how tough it can be balancing everything.

Nothing to do with not believing OP, but rather wondering how on earth you find time to exercise no matter how creative when 12 hours of your day is taken up with work?

After all, if OP had the time and energy, I’m pretty sure she would have worked out herself by now how to incorporate it? Thousands of 10, 15 min free workouts on YouTube at your disposal, moving around more if work is desk based and as previously mentioned walking in lunch or after work, time at the weekend? I would say OP is closely lacking energy and time to not see this.

TesticularHeft · 06/04/2024 11:04

Hi OP. I think you're having a tough time of it, both on this post and in real life. I'm sorry for that.

A few points I've picked up on if I may!

You say you've lost 3 stone. That's a massive achievement and you clearly know what you're doing!

That step machine - absolute waste of time and money! I think just walking on the spot will be as effective and cost less. You can also get just the feet part for much cheaper but again, not worth it.

You say no junk etc - you don't need junk to have too many calories. You could eat 300 apples a day and be in excess. It's super easy to eat too many calories. I know because I seem to do it every sodding day! Blush

A second hand home gym could be not much more than that stepper. We bought a bench and loads of weights for £60 recently from Facebook.

From what you've said I wouldn't bother with the gym as it's so far away but I'd do low impact exercises from a YouTube video or instagram post in the bedroom. There's loads you can do to be more active. You don't need to be sweaty or increase heart rate (unless that's what you want for purposes other than weight loss in which case join a 24hr gym and wake up really early. I do this and it's ok)

Hope this doesn't come across as patronising.
