Mother of 2 here that needs to exercise stay active and socialise a bit and meet new people, occupy kids with swimming lessons etc

Is the price for David Lloyd's worth it?

Also. Is it possible to be a member for David Lloyd's paying via DD monthly and not go there at all for a whole year?

Any gym is only worth the money if you go regularly. Gyms make their money but people taking out membership and not going. I think things like swimming lessons cost extra.

The DL near us now is very very expensive. Only you can decide if you have the disposable income?
We left as we felt that we would all have to go every weekend and multiple times a week for it to be worth it and it stopped being fun.

I don’t understand what you mean about not going and paying the DD? Yes they will still charge you even if you don’t go.

Yes swimming lessons are an extra cost. So is the creche.

I know it will still be charged if one does not go.

I think the membership comes in different categories and some things are not included in the cheat categories

The more things included the more expensive

Our local David Lloyd would be over £400 a month for me DH and 5 year old DC. It's nice but it's not that nice.

I have a membership to a local leisure group I have to take my own towel, but they have classes, tennis courts, squash, padel, pools, steam, sauna, gym, plus athletics track etc joint membership for me and DH is about £90 a month and we can use any of their sites, DS is £30 a month but that includes swimming lessons, swim anytime and soft play sessions which are brilliant because they happen in a huge sports hall supervised by one of the crèche workers while a HIIT/aerobics type class goes on the other side of the big net curtain thing for the parents.

They don't have an elemis spa or a heated outdoor pool which the David Lloyd does but it's not enough to justify the price difference for me

They usually have trial memberships for a month at a set fee. I'd try it out and see what you think and how often you will realistically use it.

I was a member for a while as I just love swimming in the outdoor heated pool, and they had a really good Bodypump class, but it was a 15-20 minute drive away and I wasn't going often enough to justify the high monthly cost - it was £90 I think and this was a couple of years ago and the most basic membership.

I'm now a member of The Gym which is £20.99 per month and is a 10 minute drive at a shopping centre so I can do my grocery shopping when I'm done. They have great classes and a well equipped gym, but no luxuries like a pool or even shower gel Grin, but it's great value for money.

I’m doing a 3 month membership to kick start my fitness. Once the weather’s nicer I’ll be outside and won’t need it. But I do love the outdoor pool, and will keep that up at local lido.

DL is very friendly and shiny until you’re a member. Then they’re inflexible about stuff and pretty tough on their staff too.

its more expensive to just join for 3 months, but it’s motivating me to go because I know I only have 3 months …

spiggydit · 27/03/2024 21:16

I pay £130 pcm just for me at DL - it's my only luxury as I don't go on holidays or have an expensive social life.

I find paying that amount makes me go more often so I make the most of it - a swim and a class three times a week justifies the cost.

Have you been? Two of my neighbours go, it's £200 a month if you want access to tennis and spa as well as gym.
They find it worth it and I got a couple of spa passes from them last year (spa only).

It was enormously busy - like no hope of getting on a heated bed, waiting ages for a spot by the jets at the jacuzzi. Guided Meditation things were electronic and didn't work. The much promoted special showers only last 30 seconds. The aromatherapy room smelt of nothing. The cold plunge pool fits two people uncomfortably.

What surprised me more was the cafe was right next to the children's indoor play - the noise was horrendous.

Ironically, a lady in the spa told me she was not going to stay after her two week trial. She said everything was good but "I wanted to get away from my own kids".

Turns out she plays tennis and works out daily so it would be worth it for her but as a parent, she felt horrified by the cafe set up too! She said she'd try Nuffield for gym and I don't know where else has tennis round here.

The neighbours don't use the cafe at all because of how it's placed. I presume it's because it's a family club and it's like that so people can keep an eye on the kids, but she was cross because she said she bought her two week pass on the basis that kids stuff was separate. I think the two week trial was £70.
