Can it be done from home or is the gym needed?

I need to lose weight
Atleast 3 stone
I have a "flabby" belly and I know I need to incorporate exercise.

Can it be done without going to the gym or is the gym needed and you gey much better and faster results from the gym than home workouts?

Calorie counting is going to make the biggest difference! Can't out train a bad diet. I found calorie counting + getting lots of steps in make the biggest different to start, then low impact workouts following YouTube videos. I use the gym now to strength train, but you can definitely lose the weight doing at home exercises 😊

Tatas · 23/03/2024 21:35

Sorry reading that back it doesn't sound the most helpful 😂

There's loads of at home workouts you can do using body weight or watching videos of low impact workouts (even the dancing ones I found really good as it didn't feel dull!) and the bonus was it was free on YouTube. I ended up buying some small weights to use alongside the videos that really made a difference in toning up.

The gym is great for using the machines but tbh it took a while for me to get comfortable in the gym so I really enjoyed doing the at home stuff first.

Your results will depend on so many things (rather than the location of the exercise!) so worth starting at home and seeing how you go.

My husband lost weight and really toned by doing you tube video 2 rimes a week exercises and a 20 minute exercise routine every morning. He also mountain bikes once a week now. He doesn’t drink much and has cut out most sweet stuff. He probably lost 3 stone. It too, about 18 months.

I’ve joined a gym that does circuits with weights and have lost a stone, 2 to go.

having paid incentives Emerson as does booking in advance and being in a class…,

I think doing it is the thing, not where you do it.

also…eat less.

Attictroll · 23/03/2024 21:57

Calories in calories out...I would do my fitness pal free and track food and exercise. Gym only works if you balance with food...you can't outrun a bad diet sadly

RainingCatsandfrogs · 23/03/2024 22:00

I think it's similar to WFH, some get on really well, others not as much.
I have two sons, one goes to a gym, the other works out at home, they both do what suits them best.

mondaytosunday · 23/03/2024 22:27

Yes you most definitely can, but as pp says it's what you eat that will make the biggest difference to the scale.
I lost five stone by doing video workouts (Cindy Crawford was a favourite) three times a week and walking to or from work (three miles), and eating 1500 calories a day. I needed dumbbells for the videos (I think 3 and 5kgs) and a mat. Probably on YouTube now.

Sagittarius · 23/03/2024 22:37

Of course it can be done from home, but you have to be motivated and self disciplined. I lost 2 stone once without going to the gym, I bought some dumbbells and did home workouts to youtube, along with some running and increasing daily steps

The most important thing you should focus on though is good nutrition. It's probably 80% nutrition and 20% exercise that accounts for weight loss, so whilst exercise is excellent, you will lose weight if you eat better, calorie deficit plus exercise

You definitely don’t need the gym! In the past I used to use The Shred DVD which I did 6 out of 7 days for a month to start with and it made a huge difference. I’d then slow down to 3 times a week which felt like a treat. There are tons of similar things on YouTube. The advantage with doing it at home is that you can be done and dusted in the time it would have taken you to get to gym, park, put stuff in locker etc.
I now have a peloton and again, I love how I can just hop on and get a great workout without having to travel anywhere.

Combined with a good healthy diet you can definitely lose the weight. Good luck!

Thanks everyone
I really want to to this and do it right

I just posted on another thread. I limped on at the gym for about a year but I got really fed up of it and was demotivated. I found Caroline Girvan through this forum and I bought £30 adjustable weights from Amazon and I haven’t looked back! Since I started doing her workouts in Jan I have lost 5kg! (Also in a calorie deficit) I thought I would hate working out at home but it’s working out really well, just stick the TV on and get going!

AtomicBlondeRose · 25/03/2024 20:32

Hard agree with @Menora, I hate the gym (and working out in general) but I just get on so well with Caroline Girvan and easily do them 4x a week (in a lot of her programmes she does HIIT once a week which I hate so I run instead!) I’ve been doing it since September and I honestly can’t believe what my body looks like. I never thought it would even be possible for me to have the muscles and tone I have. And that’s all at home with dumbells - the highest I have even now is 12.5kg, and I started with a pair of 2kg and a pair of 4kg.

Menora · 25/03/2024 20:36

@AtomicBlondeRose amazing! Same my legs and arms are 😳 I did not think possible!

I am trying to perfect an RDL. I wasn’t feeling much with 10kg barbell so I did 15kg but elevated my heels and that gave me something 😂 but a work in progress.

LemonySnickets · 25/03/2024 20:39

I've not been back to the gym since before Covid. I use YouTube videos. I already had dumbbells in the house but have since bought kettle bells. Lots of workouts don't even need weights at all.

There's something for everyone you just need to hunt around. I then save the ones I like and use them regularly.

FusionChefGeoff · 25/03/2024 20:52

Agree it's diet not exercise BUT the most effective exercise is one you enjoy!! I much prefer the gym ritual so that works better for me. But if you're happier with the ease of home workouts then do that. Or if class energy is your thing then try boxercise / Les mills / spin etc

Finding something you enjoy is what will make you stick to it and make it work

I actually love doing RDLs which I could never have imagined. Especially when the weights are really heavy. I feel so accomplished and strong. And I can’t wait until summer to wear shorts and vest tops! I even wear a crop top around the house sometimes which after 2 dc and in my 40s I didn’t think would happen.

Menora · 25/03/2024 21:25

@AtomicBlondeRose i also love them they are my favourite. I’m just not that good at them yet. Spend ages watching insta reels at how to do them right 😂
Dp keeps asking me why I have bought some crop tops 😂😂

GOODCAT · 25/03/2024 21:35

I think you can do it any way that works for you. Adding in things you can do for a more active lifestyle generally is good and helps you mix things up and find what you really enjoy.

I prefer to leave the house as I get interrupted at home and it doubles as me time.

Switcher · 25/03/2024 21:54

Also a Girvan fan!

HidingFromDD · 25/03/2024 22:25

To lose weight you need to end up with calorie deficit, although for me it’s very specific type, so more protein/fat and less carbs (post meno which I think makes a massive difference). But if you want to lose inches then adding in exercise makes a massive difference. Perfectly possible to do at home but you need to find what works for you and keeps you motivated. I’ve got an exercise bike and do a mix of zone 2 and hiit which I love and use more than the gym but there’s also been times when I’ve needed to sign up for classes to keep me motivated. Look at some YouTube based on either weights or resistance bands and see if they work as they’re fairly inexpensive. If you find they don’t work for you consider either gym membership or just getting used to 1 or 2 regular pay as you go classes to start with

kinkyredboots · 25/03/2024 22:30

To lose weight you need to be in a calorie deficit-you cannot outrun a bad diet. A gym will help you tone up and get stronger and lose some of the inches.

Gym might be a bit much to begin with but even getting 10000 steps a day and some you tube videos would be a good start.

Another fan of Caroline Girvan here, I would love a body like hers and thats the motivation.

Like you I'm also trying to perfect the RDL haha, it never feels like I'm doing anything so I must be doing them wrong
