Am I overdoing it??

For the past few years I've done yoga and dog walking. As I've got older I've started to have back issues so I took up Pilates. More recently I've joined a gym. I work Thursday-Saturday. I can't exercise early mornings, evenings or weekends (other than at home exercise) so I do most of my exercise Monday- Wednesday between 9-3. This is my week-

Monday- 1 hour zumba, 1 hour yoga, 2x 15m physio stretches. 2x 45 min dog walks. 30 min school run.

Tuesday - 2 x 15min physio, 2 x 45min dog walk , 30 min swim (20 lengths), 30min walk school run.

Wednesday- 45 min gym session, 1 hour pilates, 2x 45 min dog walk, 2 x 15 min physio , 30 min school run walk.

Thursday - Sunday I do the physio stretches and 1 dog walk each day .

Dh says I'm over doing it . Does it sound too much?

Yes

BarrelOfOtters · 17/03/2024 08:24

Depends how you feel? Great and full of energy or knackered old crone forcing yourself to do stuff…?

Mummame222 · 17/03/2024 08:25

No, not at all! You’re doing more then the average person on those days but I do more then that each day of the week.

It looks a lot but to a person who exercises and is into fitness it’s really not to much at all and will really contribute to a healthy life style!

twohotwaterbottles · 17/03/2024 08:25

If you're happy and you're body is happy I can't see why. I would even include the walking although it's really good for us, it's just going about life. 😊

twohotwaterbottles · 17/03/2024 08:26
  • wouldn't include walking. No glasses sorry 😂
shearwater2 · 17/03/2024 08:26

What are the reasons for the back issues? I mean, I only start to have twinges if I don't do yoga regularly or feel a bit unfit. What does the physio say? Have you had a bone density scan?

PanadTe · 17/03/2024 08:27

I don’t think so. But then I don’t class walking or physio as exercise. So to me you’re only doing an hour or so a day.

Moltenpink · 17/03/2024 08:27

Not too much. You’d be doing far more if you had a manual labour job

This really, if you’re always sore, tired and hungry then maybe. If not, no.

MikeRafone · 17/03/2024 08:30

No

youve been exercising for years, your body will be used to it - as should most peoples- you will get people telling you it’s to much but will depend on their yard stick

This is the most important bit.

It looks a lot but it's all stacked into 3 days. If you consider it over a week it doesn't seem that excessive. It's just a question of whether you feel ok squeezing it all into 3 days. It's a nice mix so it doesn't seem likely to cause you injury.

Magicisuponus · 17/03/2024 08:32

It sounds good and healthy, assuming you feel well with it.
Personally I don’t really count dog walking and school run as exercise, and see it more as daily life.

I only included it because I walk around 2 hours a day. It's not power walking though more leisurely stroll with a ball.

My week in comparison:

Mon: Morn 15mins of stretching/yoga. In work I’ll walk or cycle approx 5km off road. Eve climbing wall for 3hrs.

Tues: Morn and Work same as above. Eve run 7km

Weds: Morn and work same as above. Eve either dog walk or bike ride offroad.

Thurs: Morn stretch and a more sedate day in work. Eve dog walk or bike ride.

Fri: Morn and work same as Thurs, although usually a 2km walk in afternoon. Eve climbing wall 3hrs.

Sat: 5km park run. Then either 4hrs bike or walk.

Sun same as Sat but without run.

RemarkablyBrightCreature · 17/03/2024 08:34

You’re incredibly lucky to have the time to do so much exercise - humans are meant to be active, keep going!

devildeepbluesea · 17/03/2024 08:35

I do similar, walk the dog twice and I work FT. I wouldn’t say you’re overdoing it provided you feel fine.

Oh and for the record I absolutely would include the walking. One of the best low impact cardio there is.

LuciferRising · 17/03/2024 08:36

What does your DH do? To people who do no exercise, it will look a lot. But, we are meant to move.

Started about 15 years ago as a very occasional twinge from sudden movement. I took up yoga which seemed to help but the past few years it's got worse. I've had an X-ray, seen a chiropractor, had physio and saw a physio consultant at hospital. Basically it's a muscle in my lower back that spasms . Advice was to build core. Also may be a minor disc issue . Doctor basically said there's nothing they can do.

If you are doing yoga or pilates wrongly with bad posture you can actually get back issues from that. I'd want to investigate what the cause of the back problem is, particularly to rule out osteoporosis, as it isn't normal and to be accepted that you just get back issues when you get older, particularly if you are a healthy weight and fit, and particularly not if you do yoga and pilates which are supposed to strengthen your body and mind.

My yoga teacher is very slender and although she is very fit and toned when she had a bone density scan she was heading towards osteoporosis. She now has HRT, incorporates weights into her exercise routine and has changed her diet.

That's how I feel and I am enjoying it. Dh got me worried about exercise fatigue. He goes to the gym several times a week and is fairly well read on fitness.

I do get tired but I'm currently struggling with sleep/night sweats (peri menopause) so feel it's more that.

@Momstermunch

Yes that's how I feel. If I was doing hard core cardio 3 hours a day it would be different but most of it is quite low level I would say apart from maybe the gym.

Mine is 2 x weights focussed gym session a week, 1 x cardio, 1 x yoga. At this time of year lots of gardening. I have a dog and walk her once a day. Average daily steps 12k/5-6 miles. And I work full time, having to sit for 7 hours a day at least.
