Trainers for Achilles tendinitis

Hi,
I’m looking for recommendations for trainers for walking - normal everyday life plus walks of up to an hour on pavements or paths, no hillwalking etc. I have recurring chronic tendinitis in one ankle and wonder if my shoes are aggravating it.
What should I be looking for? I have quite wide feet and have an unrelated injury in the other foot which means I need lots of space around my toes.
Thanks

I should have said not Hoka. Man in running shop said they don’t have the right shape around my ankle and I wear out the lining quickly.

I was recommended Nike Airforce by 2 podiatrists. They are supportive around the ankle and rise up towards the heel.

However it won’t go away unless you address it. Even with good shoes.

Have you tried barefoot shoes? I find them great for spreading my toes out and have less ankles issues since

Getting orthotics might be more useful, as if your foot is partially rolling over, that's going to put more stress on the tendon - you might need to go up a size or so to accommodate them, but a fitting in a proper running shop should ensure you get something that's right for you.

I like Ons, detested Brooks, but their 23 models seemed a lot better than the 2015-22 ones that I tried but took an instant dislike to. I don't feel the love for Hokas or Asics, either, even though millions of people absolutely love them. So trying them in a shop where staff know what they are doing is better than relying upon other people's intrinsically individual opinions.

Thanks.
I’ve been doing physio and haven’t ran for months (which I thought was the cause) and it has came back anyway.
I’m wearing Brooks for planned walks but they are very ugly and more importantly just don’t feel substantial enough. I used to wear a particular style of Puma which have been discontinued.
I hadn’t considered orthotics but will ask in the running shop - would they help if my usual gait is pretty even?
I haven’t tried barefoot shoes although years ago I had a Nike version which were great - again discontinued!

You need a high speed saline injection to eradicate it.

Wellwhatsthis · 07/02/2024 19:39

I have never heard of that saline injection! Will bear it in mind if I ever manage to get a GP appointment about this.

I had it for 3 years of unbearable pain.

Gone in 10 minutes.

Since seeing a podiatrist, he recommended that I find a pair of trainers and I now wear Nike Pegasus running shoes (not for running lol.) I have plantar fasciitis as well as painful Achilles tendons and these shoes really help to support my arches and my ankles. I also have unnaturally wide feet! I have not tried to re-introduce other types of shoes apart from supportive flat boots but doubt I could wear heels for more than 5 minutes now.

My physio recommended I use these heel pads in my trainers and shoes when I was having recurring achilles tendonitis.

I have them in all my trainers and boots and they really do work. My achilles hasn't bothered me in over a year now but if I don't use the heel pads, I notice the difference quickly and my achilles starts playing up again.

Any shoe with a heel lift. That's what did the trick for me in the end. Plus physio and a massage gun.... But it was the heel lifts that finally made the biggest difference and quickly. I live in barefoot style shoes and it probably caused the problem!

Wellwhatsthis · 08/02/2024 11:24

I have a massage gun and ultrasound machine but I struggle to get in the correct position to use them properly - feel like my back is sore afterwards.
I will try a different physio as the one I have isn’t making any new suggestions so thanks very much everyone for the advice.

I'm prone to a Haglund's deformity on my ankle aggravating my achilles.
My running shoes are a size bigger than my winter boots, and 3 sizes bigger than my Birkenstocks so my wide feet can spread and not push back into the heel and apply pressure.

Currently on my 2nd pair of New Balance 860s which were recommended at the local running specialist.

On Cloud are very cushioned.

Wellwhatsthis · 25/03/2024 18:56

Just to update: I have been to see a podiatrist who does biomechanics and I have new exercises to try, cork wedges to go inside my non-running trainers and he’s recommended specific Hoka and ASICS but I haven’t been to try them on yet.
After a few weeks of exercises I have to try a short run, changing my running style to taking shorter steps. I think I will find that very difficult but if it gets me back running then I am willing to try.
Thanks for all the advice.

And now it’s back… as bad as ever

BlueChampagne · 26/03/2024 12:48

For many years, on the advice of my physio, I put a couple of vertical cuts in the heels of my trainers to relieve pressure on the achilles.
