What time works for mums?

Hi Ladies,
I teach martial arts and offer Ladies Kick & Punch Fit classes during evenings. It's not ideal for mums and I'm looking to open classes in the morning / lunch time.
Would this help? What time would work best please?
I would greatly appreciate your comments.
Many thanks.

On behalf of the mums I can confirm we're free on a Friday at 11:45-13:15

You know 'mums' are a group of women as diverse as any other, with different lives and commitments don't you? There's not one time that works for us all.

NinjaNat5 · 07/02/2024 16:35

Thank you very much. It helps as a guide :-)

This is the kind of class I'd be interested in attending if it was running in my area. Straight after the school run, 9.15/9.30 would appeal to me Mondays or Fridays.

Dontopenthetrapdoor · 07/02/2024 16:54

Monday 9.15-9.30 would work for me.

piglet81 · 07/02/2024 16:55

Depends one quite a number of factors, not least whether they work… ‘mums’ aren’t one homogeneous mass, you know!

If you’re aiming for mat leave - anytime is fine but the option to bring babies would be key.

Otherwise, I’d be at work so evenings and weekends!

piglet81 · 07/02/2024 17:09

What time works for dads, I wonder?

NeptunaOfTheMermaidBattleSquadron · 07/02/2024 17:10

As an avid karate student when I was younger, I'd love to pick up martial arts again but I'd personally only look at a Saturday or Sunday or an evening after 7:30pm so DH is home with the kids unless you offered a creche or a mum+baby session (would love this if some movements could be adapted by a skilled teacher).

It's tricky because the days I don't work are the days I don't have childcare.

Wictc · 07/02/2024 17:13

0600 so I could be back by 07.00, or 20.00 or later when they’re in bed. It’s annoying when things are during the day, nearly everyone I know works.

It's not really relevant if the OP is trying to run classes for women. We don't have to consider the menz or what they would do/think/feel for everything we ever do, do we? Women are allowed to have space to train. We don't have to run businesses into the ground to make a point.

PurpleBugz · 07/02/2024 17:37

I would need a crèche to be able to attend. There is a serious lack of any exercise in my area as no crèche

RandomUsernameHere · 07/02/2024 18:01

For lots of people it would be lunchtimes. Not just mums but anyone who works close to where the class is.

ConflictofInterest · 07/02/2024 18:08

An early evening joint mum and kids class would be great. Otherwise there isn't really a time I could go as I'm either at work or have picked my kids up. We'd all love to learn karate but I can't find anywhere where we could all do the same class at the same time. We use YouTube instead.

Icantfindanewname · 07/02/2024 18:12

We have a 10am start on various days, plus three evenings at various times. Personally, 9:15am would be more helpful (and stop me mooching round random shops to use the time). I get some odd looks wandering around in full kit...🤣

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 07/02/2024 18:16

Surely most "mums" who are home in the day have small children to look after? And everyone else will be at work?

If you're keen to target the mum demographic, I reckon very early morning or late evening would be your best bet.

ParadiseLaundry · 07/02/2024 19:06

Op already said they run classes on an evening, they are specifically looking for times during the day.

Lots of people saying they work so would wouldn't be able to attend, but they would be able to to attend the evening ones? lots of mums work part time and are looking for classes during the day when their kids are school. The classes I attend are always full of women on their days off, work from home with flexible hours and some SAHMs

Fair enough. I tend to assume that the vast majority of women go back to work when their kids start school, or at least work PT during the day, so wouldn't really expect a class catering to that cohort to be viable. Of course, I'm aware that some women SAH even when their kids are in school, but I can't imagine that there are that many of them these days? Maybe I'm wrong!

The standard evening slots will be as difficult for WOHPs as they're likely to be for SAHPs, given that everyone will typically be busy with family dinners, putting children to bed etc. Hence the suggestion for later evening slots (ie post bedtime), which would suit most parents with partners at home, though no good for single parents, obviously. There will be no one size fits all!

Not sure where you're based, but I also teach in a martial arts school in Frimley which offers family class (kids & parents practicing together.) It works well 👌

Personally I tend to exercise straight after morning drop-off. I start work after lunch and work into the evening, so a morning slot always works best for me. Can’t say I speak for all mums though!

Normandy144 · 07/02/2024 22:53

Lunch time is best for me. Ideally 12pm start. I work full time but from home, so prefer to do my exercise while the kids are at school but also so it breaks up my day. Other mums I know who have school aged kids but don't work, or work part time, like to fit it in after school drop off. Unfortunately 9.15 does not work for me as I tend to follow traditional office hours.

Copperoliverbear · 08/02/2024 07:12

I'd say after the school run.

BogRollBOGOF · 08/02/2024 12:33

School runs mean that SAHMs tend to be busy before 9:30 and after 2:30.
Mums with children in nursery often have a 12pm pick up if their children have half days. That would clash with flexible working mums who favour lunch time slots.

Mid-morning can work well, but it depends on who you're aiming to target.

Afternoons tend to be busy with pick-ups and children's activities.
