Who to see for hip pain?

Asking on here as I think I caused it from overdoing squats (with bad form)😫
I have a pain in my hip that I’ve had for a while now. It got very sore at one point so much so that it was painful walking and made me limp. I went to a chiropractor who cured the worst of it, but after a few sessions I found I was in more pain during and after the sessions than I was if I just left it. So now I’m scared to go back and I’m left with just a minor pain in my hip, I’m just aware of it and would like to try some other treatment.

What would anyone recommend for hip pain? Osteopath? Sports massage? I was looking at radio frequency or something like that? I am going regular Pilates with the hope that that will help.

Over the years I've regularly seen an osteopath for hip issues. Usually a couple of sessions plus exercises to do at home does the trick.

If it's bursitis you just need to rest it.

I have a steroid jab administered by my GP for hip pain caused by osteoarthritis. I think it’s available for injury pain too.

It depends where the pain is and what is causing it. What could be a simple fix is, are you stretching your glutes? My glutes drag my hip muscle when tight and cause pain. I stretch them 2-3 times a day to keep on top of it and then I have to keep them strong.
A private physio could be a good place to start as they can diagnose a multitude of things, even if they can't treat it.

Laserbird16 · 15/01/2024 10:55

I would go to a physio first. Can you describe the pain? Is it to the front? Maybe you've done something to you hip flexors and you're aggravated them with squats, maybe you've torn the labrum. If it's where your spine joins your hips at the back, it could be the sacroiliac joint. If you have achy pain deep in your hip it could be osteoarthritis. It could be any of the glute muscles being tight/weak. A physio should be able to work it out or suggest x-rays/mris/ultrasound as needed and a program of corrective exercises.

Physio.

Sports massage will relieve symptoms and help the healing of an injury, but may not address the root cause.

Chiropractors and osteopaths have - erm - limited clinical evidence of effectiveness, shall we say

Physio will look at treating the injury and preventing recurrence.

Physio sounds good then, the pain is minor now but it’s there all the time. It feels a bit like heat inside my hip (from the side). It did go for a short while after I started sleeping on my other side, with top leg raised on a pillow but I can’t seem to keep that position all night anymore.

Definitely a good physio, they’ll not just massage etc, but will likely provide you with suitable exercises to prevent recurrence.

HappyHamsters · 15/01/2024 11:08

A physio or chiropractor should ask if you have seen a doctor, had xrays or scans before they treat you.

Cheeesus · 15/01/2024 11:11

I agree with physio.

Have you tried yoga though? Obviously I can’t tell if yours is the same as mine, but I get hip pain because of my tight hamstrings and yoga helps. You can google ‘yoga for hips’ and there is an Adriene one that helps me.

Pain to the outside of your hip could be tendinitis or bursitis. To make yourself more comfortable rest, Panadol osteo and NSAID (ibuprofen or Meloxicam if your GP will prescribe it) help. Plus not drinking (alcohol makes the inflammation worse). Good luck!

Maddy70 · 15/01/2024 11:21

I have bursitis. So painful. A steroid injection solves it. Go to your gp

AcceptingTherapy · 15/01/2024 11:58

I’d not heard of bursitis before but googled, I don’t have swelling or anything, it doesn’t feel like there is any liquid or inflammation there, could it still be that? As I say it’s only a minor pain not enough for painkillers or anything, I’m just aware of it and would like to get rid of it.

Laserbird16 · 15/01/2024 12:12

To be fair you can have quite significant swelling but it not be visible as the hip joint is so deep. If it's not super painful that is a good sign. However, as the hip joint is so complex it could be almost anything so seeing a physio is probably first course of action.

RayKray · 15/01/2024 17:20

If it's a minor pain I'd do mobility work. Tom Morrison's Simplistic Mobility Method is good

Mischance · 15/01/2024 17:28

I would recommend getting a diagnosis. Diagnosis first, treatment second. See the doc.

NewYearTimeToChange · 16/01/2024 08:15

I was having hip pain that was niggling rather than agony and have found hip flexor stretches really helpful. I think it was tightness that was making other areas compensate but the pain has pretty much disappeared as long as I regularly do the stretches.
