Exercise Equipment in an Upstairs Flat....advice please!

Is there any aerobic exercise equipment that is okay to use in a flat? I live in a block with neighbours above, below, to the right, and to the left.....and diagonally in every direction!

I would love a treadmill, but I know that this is definitely out of the question, as the impact noise would create far too much noise for my neighbours.

How about a Cross Trainer? Is that likely to also be noisy? I have previously been downstairs in a house, while someone upstairs used a Step Machine....it was so loud downstairs!

What about an Exercise Bike? Is that likely to be okay?

I'm not interested in using a rowing machine.

I would absolutely love to invest in a piece of equipment to use for a regular workout at home, but I'm not sure if anything is suitable when living in the middle of a densely populated building. The man who lives below me can be quite intimidating, so I definitely do not want to irritate him.

The floors between the flats are concrete, if that makes any difference?

One of the residents in my block does use an exercise machine and the banging on impact travels through the building. I have no idea which flat that noise comes from or what equipment he/she uses, but it's a rhythmic tap/bang. I think it's possibly a treadmill. I've got used to it, so it doesn't bother me too much anymore. But I do not want to create that kind of noise myself. I would be mortified...

....So, does anyone know - is there any aerobic exercise I can do/any equipment that I can use, that won't affect my neighbours?

"One of the residents in my block does use an exercise machine and the banging on impact travels through the building."

Well, there's your answer!

What about low-impact? That used to be recommended, for the lower wear on the joints. Maybe a Step?

Here's a (seriously retro) video!

We have a cross trainer and you can hear it through the whole house, and our house has pretty thick walls. Sorry!

Exercise bikes are almost silent these days.

You need an exercise bike with magnetic resistance. I'd go for a spin bike over a normal exercise bike. I like my music loud (so I can't hear my heavy breathing Grin) so I wear headphones.

@WhereYouLeftIt thank you, I love this video! I would definitely like to try something like this, unfortunately I think the marching would be too much for the man downstairs. But I am going to have a look for something like this, but without the marching. Thank you very much.

@afaloren thank you, that is helpful. The cross trainer is off the list of possibilities now!

@bleughgreen @MrSand @nbee84 ....thank you! It's good have a consensus here! So a spin bike with magnetic resistance or a peloton are sounding very positive. This is really good news!

i think it probably depends on the brand of machine as the cross trainers and bikes at the gym don’t make any noise at all, but they’ll be top of the range and ££££ to buy. You also need to factor how you’ll get the item upstairs if you don’t have a lift!

Something like a slideboard could be the answer. They were created for skaters to be able to do off-skate stride training but lots of people use them for cardio too. Low-impact, very quiet and also very, very neat storage. They are a lot of fun if you play some enjoyable music and just kind of rock out as you slide over and back. It's quite high intensity, so bear in mind that you may need to start out in 10 minute bursts and work up to a longer "skate."

We also have concrete between the floor of our flat and the one below but the room is also carpeted and my DP used a bike in that room. No isses with neighbour below at all.

I agree, we have a good quality exercise bike on the first floor. It’s sits on carpet, and no noise downstairs or in the next room.

Not equipment, but Youtube has loads of suitable workouts - "apartment friendly workout"
