I've just ordered some 3kg weights. Is that ok for a beginner? Any you tube recommendations I can use with 3kg?

3kg is totally fine for beginners and I go back to them if I have a training gap

Indeed you might want to start with body weight only or have a couple of soup tins handy - everyone's base is different

Amy body fit is nice
Caroline girvan is brutal but effective - I am sure she had a beginner series
The NHS also have some online videos

The key thing is to learn the technique to avoid injury - which is why starting with body weight only can be so useful - notice are knees / arms / back bent or straight ; which way are arms / hands rotating/head positions/

If at all possible, pay for a few PT sessions or find a local body pump class

As you progress different weights will be handy. Different parts of the body have different levels of strength, for example your legs in a squat would be much stronger than you triceps in an isolated movement. For example today dumbbells I used ranged from 6kg-20kg depending on what I was doing. But for now just getting started is the best thing. If you can go to a gym and get some help from a PT that will give you a great start. If not people on here really like Caroline Girvan. Also Meg Squats on YouTube is great. Have fun!

3kg is a reasonable starting point.

I know lots of people on here love Caroline Girvan but her stuff is really hardcore. Unless you are already fairly fit, I wouldn't start there.

Something like madfit or Lucy Wyndham Reed is a better place to start.

At the moment I really enjoy fitbymik but I think it might be too fast paced if you haven't lifted weights before

Jessica smith is great for beginners on youtube

I'm a big fan of Caroline Girvan but agree that her programmes are tough. However she has a 6 week beginners programme on her App. You can download the app (it's called CGX) and get a free 2 week trial. You could try that then decide whether or not to subscribe. I think it's about £79 a year. Alternatively she has a lot of free content on YouTube so it might be worth getting the 2 week trial, paying for just 1 month to complete the 6 week beginner programme then moving onto her free programmes on YouTube.

I have been lifting weights for a couple of years and still can't get through the first beginner video she has!

I wish she would do a pre beginner version because I really want to do her programme but it is very dispiriting

@spriots have you tried the Beginner ones on the App? They are very different to the ones marked Beginners on You Tube.

No, I haven't, just the YouTube ones. As well as being difficult, I also found those over complicated

Anjelika · 02/01/2024 18:35

@spriots on the App there’s a 6 week beginners programme. Each workout is around 30 mins and the pace is quite a bit slower than her other programs. Might be worth downloading the App for a 2 week trial and trying them out.

Search for Hasfit beginner workouts, it's a husband and wife team and they do really great videos, some shorter, some longer, suitable for beginners. I'm a beginner and these are the only people I've found on YouTube that make videos I want to go back to and do again.

Fitness Blender is a good starting point for those who find Caroline Girvan a bit challenging.
