Using weights - how to start

I'm mid 50s and very out of shape and overweight.

I'm planning to walk everyday but would also like to add in some weight training.

Where to start?

I have a box of unopened weights at home 🙄 and thought about something like Body Pump. Any other suggestions please?

I really like HasFit on YouTube for beginners. I started with them years ago and no regularly go to the gym etc. They have loads of different length/ability workouts.

Have a look at Cheryl Coombs on YouTube lift with c I think it's called she has some good workouts also bodyfit by Amy has a good range of workouts especially for beginners

If you can, go to a gym and get an induction session with someone who will watch you and correct your form as you could injure yourself doing things without guidance (I speak from experience!). Then you’ll know what you’re doing with the home weights.

Heather Robertson 😍😍. Her website streams through YouTube - she has heaps of workouts and a fantastic, free, Facebook forum

Start with lighter weights for a modest amount of time, until you get used to exercise again. You could get a personal trainer for a couple of sessions. They could work out a suitable routine for your needs and level. GL

Thank you. I did think about booking a session with a PT I'm just embarrassed at how out of shape I am (I know that's their job 😂).

I'd REALLY recommend seeing a PT to work out what weights you should be using and to show you correct form. Too easy to go too heavy and hurt yourself, or too easy and not very effective. A PT can also create a programme for you to follow and progress.

Honestly, they'd be delighted to see someone committed to change (I'm sure my PT despairs of me - my goals are 'turn up' 😂 - I've been seeing him for YEARS).

If you want to do something at home, I found https://www.youtube.com/@RobertasGym this youtube channel a good place to start. Long rest periods, nothing too challenging. Or I also really liked the Body Coach on youtube as well, he has workouts for different levels. Body Coach incorporates a lot of dumbbell use in his videos as well, and I would say like he keeps saying, don't get stuck at the same weight for too long. I did that cos it felt heavy enough, it wasn't until I started pushing myslf to lift heavier that I really noticed the difference. Good luck!
