Walking pads

Has anyone got one of those walking pads that can go up to 10kph? I've been thinking about getting one for fast walking (and running for a beginner). Space is an issue so thought it might work as it can be pushed under the sofa. I have a cross trainer which I use for a few weeks then become bored so thought it might offer variety. I know I can walk outdoors but when I get in from work, it's late by the time I've put my children to bed. I tend to exercise at 5:30am so need to be in the house as they are asleep

I do! I’ve had my walking pad since about October which is when I quit the gym as I was rarely going . I WFH and use my walking pad most days for about 45 minutes but hoping to increase that to 1.5-2 hours. I just leave mine out next to the balcony doors in my living room, but if I had a sofa with more space underneath I’d have tucked it under there. I’ve did a slow jog a few times on the walking pad, but usually just do a steady walk at a pace of 5KM /PH.

Walking outside is the best but walking inside is better than nothing, because realistically I only leave my house if I need to pop to the shops especially if it’s dark or raining. When I lived in the city I enjoyed walking about a lot more actually, I could do 10K easily on a daily basis without even realising. But I get a little bored walking around in my town and wary of off-leash dogs in the park.

Is it suitable for a jog/walk alternate? What speed would a jog be? Could you tell me which one you have please?

What one did you buy?

2024fit · 30/12/2023 15:13

@pinkyponkyplink Yes, I think I put it up to around 7KM/H for a jog, you operate the speed using the remote control that comes with it.

@Oppositioblue This is the one I got, I think it was slightly cheaper when I bought it.

That's the one I've been looking at but have been trying to find a table/tablet/rail holder to go over the top. There are some with them included but over £200 so seems a lot just for the holder/rail

Do you use a mat underneath it or would my rug be ok? The rest of the room is hard floor

@2024fit do you know if it has any safety features? I am also thinking of buying this one but I have a 3 year old who is into absolutely everything...

2024fit · 31/12/2023 22:17

Apparently it’s not meant to be used on carpet, I assume that applies to rugs too. Not sure why but think it interferes with the running of it somehow…makes it overheat or something..I use it on laminate floor with an exercise mat underneath it just in case since I live in rented accommodation.

@VanquishGirl there’s a switch on the machine and you plug it in at the wall, but you also need to use the remote control to get it moving, so I guess if you keep the remote control away from your kid it may be okay?!

I've got one - it's Fitodo brand which doesn't seem to be sold on Amazon now but was about £160 plus delivery.

I mainly walk on it, around 4.5kph but have started doing C25K and my jogging is 6.5kph. I use the remote control to change it - not as responsive as the gym treadmill but it is a fraction of the price.

It's on my carpet in the living room, but the carpet is really thin and worn out, not plush at all. I'll use a pad when I replace the carpet later this year.

It doesn't fit under my sofa unfortunately, so is a pretty permanent feature in my living room right now! I set it up in front of the TV so I can watch a programme whilst I'm walking. It's been so good to use when it's too dark/wet to go outside, and my teen uses it too so that's a bonus.

I can't decide if I need the rail or not. It's a big difference in price but I like scrolling on my phone when exercising so think I'll need it It's about another £50 more

@2024fit thank you. That was really helpful.

porridgeisbae · 03/01/2024 11:05

@pinkyponkyplink A folding manual treadmill might be cheaper and would have a rail come as part of it.

pinkyponkyplink · 03/01/2024 23:36

I've ordered one without a rail. Coming tomorrow. Will stop me scrolling so I can focus on moving

I managed to walk at 7kph for 8 mins then I ran for 10 mins at 10kph. Will I eventually need a fast speed or is it better to run at 10kph for a longer time?

OP posts:
porridgeisbae · 07/01/2024 18:59

Ooh that's really impressive OP, especially as you only just got it. Whether you'd need a faster speed depends on your goals. I'm impressed if I do much on the treadmill at 6mph and that's when I'm feeling energetic.

What is your goal? Does the machine go any faster than that? You could get to being able to run 5k on it and then increase your speed in doing 5k.

pinkyponkyplink · 07/01/2024 20:35

@porridgeisbae it really surprised me too. I do walk fast and normally don't seem to be able to run more than a couple of minutes but it's more controlled inside so I started aiming for a couple of minutes but managed 10 before I knew it.

The walking pad only goes up to 10kph

porridgeisbae · 07/01/2024 21:30

@pinkyponkyplink Ah ok I was confused between k and how many miles that was. That isn't very fast as a top speed. You could use it for if you want to do something in front of the telly maybe and mix it with other activities or terrain if you feel the need once you become an expert? :)

If you are running then to be able to eventually run half an hour is a great goal. Then if you felt like it you could enter a 5k :)

pinkyponkyplink · 07/01/2024 21:47

I'm not sure if I need to send it back and get a treadmill!! I know it might be a phase and it's one of those you can push under the sofa so easy to store

OP posts:
Mirabai · 07/01/2024 22:23

I had a treadmill for a long time

Pluses:
Much more comfortable to walk on as wider and longer
More varied speeds and gradient
Chunky with handles front and side
No problem on carpet
Could easily walk for an hour while watching rubbish TV.

Minuses:
Takes up much more room
Heavy and chunky, not easy to move

porridgeisbae · 07/01/2024 22:32

I've always had manual treadmills, in theory you could fold them to put them somewhere if you want to and they're fairly inexpensive. IDK if you could go much faster than OP's speed, but some come out of the box on an incline which makes them a better calorie burn.

pinkyponkyplink · 07/01/2024 22:32

We are having some major work done on our house so I got the walking pad knowing it wouldn't take up much room. Think I'll have to stick with it and try and improve my time running rather than speed. It's good for getting steps in
