London Marathon 2024

I thought I would start a thread for those running the London Marathon 2024.
I entered the ballot again for this year after many years of rejection and got in!

I did, however, tear my calf in January and again in September so I've not been able to build a good base ready to start training in January.

I am a slow runner, I will probably finish at about 5 and a half hours so hopefully I will be fit enough to get round.

Anyone else?

@DeepfriedPizza and @tinydancer88 I’m so sorry about your injuries. This was me last year (and to a certain degree, this yr too). I couldn’t even bear to watch the marathon as I was so upset and disappointed. Best wishes for a speedy recovery.

xsquared · 06/04/2024 11:03

Sorry to those having to defer because of injuries. That's so frustrating bwing so close to the date. I hope you all feel better soon and stay injury free for next year!

Got my wave time and colour pen yesterday, but I don't know anyone else who is in the same colour as me. Club mates are either in blue, red or yellow.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 06/04/2024 11:56

Are you in green @xsquared ? My advice would be to get there in good time, the loo queues there are a lot worse than the others for some reason

xsquared · 06/04/2024 14:06

Yes, I am @Lastqueenofscotland2 .

Thanks for the tip. I was told I was lucky to be in green as there are only 1000 starters amd the famous participants also start there!

RandomUsernameHere · 06/04/2024 15:44

Yes I heard that's the celeb zone!

TretQueenie · 13/04/2024 14:06

I’m in blue wave 7 I think starting at 10.30ish. Am feeling excited now. My leg has settled down somewhat but I know the longer distance will test it. I’m still struggling with which bag to bring or buy. I already own a few but none quite right. I ordered and returned a flip belt so still looking. I’m not planning to bring water so while I’ve a belt from decathlon with room for a large bottle, it would be a waste of space. I’m starting from Blackheath which I’m not familiar with as would have preferred to stick with the tube or DLR but I’ll guess I’ll manage. My biggest fear at the moment is losing my race number once I get it!

xsquared · 18/04/2024 23:41

Travelling down tomorrow!

TretQueenie · 19/04/2024 23:08

Excited!! Best wishes everyone - hope you enjoy it.

I’m getting excited for London and I’m only watching on TV, run it three times before.

I got a ballot place on my first go and went from non runner to marathon in 6 months. I remember the days leading up to it being the scariest thing ever, I was so so scared about what I was going to do! I had promised myself if I ran London I’d never run again…

A man in my start gate must have seen the fear on my face and asked me if it was my first time. I said yes, he replied “don’t worry, you’re going to love it, you’re going to run across that finish line and the first thing you will say is, I want to do it again!”…
in my head I’m thinking “what utter bullshit”!

I ran in 2018 so the hottest one on record, I slowed right down because of the heat and took over 6 hours. But everywhere I looked people were cheering me on and I was surrounded by people with incredible stories- it was the most emotional day ever.

The man at the start was only wrong about one thing- I didn’t run over the finish line, I kind of waddled 😂. But I did indeed love it and as they put the medal around my neck, I did indeed say “I want to do it again”!

I’ve now done 3 more, including 2 more Londons and have my 5th booked this year. The London Marathon changed me and it changed my life.

If it’s your first time, I promise you, you can do it, there will be millions of people to help you along. You only get one first marathon so have the best time! And to the experienced one, enjoy the party and I hope you hit your goals!

emmsyg · 20/04/2024 07:14

Best wishes everyone! I’m early start at 4.30 this morning leaving Belfast to fly to London, hopefully that means I’ll sleep tonight 😂

good luck everyone and I hope you get the race you want. I’ve got a niggly knee so hoping the pain stays at bay for a while, plus my children have given me a cold but we’ll get through it!

Axx · 20/04/2024 07:20

I'm going to cheer everyone on, good luck to you! We need a mumsnet wave so I can spot some of you.

AuntieStella · 20/04/2024 07:27

How did you all get on? Was it amazing?

RandomUsernameHere · 22/04/2024 14:26

Had a really bad race unfortunately and didn't enjoy it at all. How did everyone else get on?

Clearinguptheclutter · 22/04/2024 14:35

having entered the ballot for 2025 (I've done it every year for quite a while now) I'd be keen to hear how you got on.
Sorry @RandomUsernameHere that you didn't enjoy it. Hope you're doing ok today x

xsquared · 22/04/2024 14:45

AuntieStella · 20/04/2024 07:27

Remember that the ballot for 2025 opens today.....

I've entered the ballot for next year, but having ran it and got a Boston Qualifier, I'd like to withdraw my application.

Does anyone know whether this is possible?

xsquared · 22/04/2024 14:52

Well, it's already been 24 hours after I crossed the finish line. It's come and gone as quick as a flash.

It was my first time running the London Marathon and I absolutely loved it. There's not enough words for me to describe the whole experience.

The views of Canary Wharf, approaching Tower Bridge and Big Ben seems more spectacular when the crowds are cheering you along.

Having said that, I was laser focused on my time goal and managed to run sub 3:30, with a sprint in the last 600m which I never thought I'd do.

Thank you all, for keeping the thread going and us motivated.

Clearinguptheclutter · 22/04/2024 15:09

@xsquared under 3.30 omg. Well done you.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 22/04/2024 15:16

Well done xsquared! I was hoping for the same but my stomach called time at mile 20 and had to walk/run the last 10k to manage the nausea. Worst marathon for me since 2018 so I am very very disappointed today!
