10 week old swimming lessons

Hello!

husband will be taking 10 week old baby to swimming lessons soon (water babies). She has lots of hair on her head and I wondered if it’s worth getting a hat for her? I just can’t picture what he will do with her wet hair between the lesson and coming home for a bath - will she just travel home with a wet head?! doesnt sound good to me. I don’t know! Feeling silly asking this.

Does she not have a hat anyway? How much hair does she have?

If it's fine baby hair you might find it dries while they're getting changed, but yes pop a washable hat on and pop it in the washing machine when they get back so it's not covered in chlorine.

Good luck with your swimming lessons, it's so lovely to watch them learn to swim

Do you mean a swimming hat? If so, they don’t keep hair dry.

Fine baby hair dries really quickly, but you could carefully put a gentle hairdryer on it if you’re worried.

And a normal hat for coming home is a must of course!

Baby hair dries quickly! What do you do at home when you've washed their hair? My kids are 4 and 7 and have never used a hairdryer and don't seem to have suffered.

Towel it off, get them dressed, drive home!

If you're walking then pop a hat on them in the pram, if you're driving then no need (you shouldn't use hats in the car), just pop the heating on.

A quick zip up onesie with a hood is great for baby swimming. They are cold once they get out!

@goababy ooh I’m sorry I meant swimming cap!!! Of course she has a hat oops - just wondered if she would be ok for her wet hair to be in a normal hat on way home. Sorry if that’s a silly Q!!
she has a LOT of hair … I mean a lot! I usually towel dry thoroughly and very gently, from a distance have the hairdryer over it.

@Wahwoo has just answered my Q though that the cap doesn’t keep the hair dry, which I didn’t know. I can’t swim & never had lessons, so a total moron about this topic.

@ImiO there are no silly questions with a new baby, especially if it's not something you've experience with.

Yes sadly swim caps don't keep hair dry, they're more to stop hair getting into the pool and to be more streamlined in the water (don't think this should be an issue for your little one 🤣).

I can't see any issue with her hair being in a normal hat, apart from that it will stink of chlorine rubbing off her hair and probably get a bit damp. A cotton hat probably easiest to chuck straight in machine with swimming costumes when they get home.

It's a long time since I took babies swimming but back then you were supposed to wait a certain amount of time after the polio vaccinations before putting them in the water - they need to have the vax before they can go, and it needs to be out of their system so they don't infect others. I think that was 20 weeks plus, but don't know if current advice is similar. Might be worth checking?

Wahwoo · 24/11/2023 20:41

I’ve done a lot of baby swimming in the last few years @DelphiniumBlue , and never heard that. Reputable baby swimming places start as little as 6 weeks.

PrincessesRUs · 24/11/2023 20:53

I've done waterbabies for years with my two, at six my biggest is just about too old now but I'll be sad to leave - the lessons are excellent and staff are really good. You're aware baby will go underwater from the outset? Not even sure they do tiny swim caps!! Mine never really had hair until 2yo! Do maybe get a fleece wrap/fleece wetsuit for little one until you know how they dealt with the cold. They also have to have a neoprene happy nappy. My top tip is that paper swim nappies can be washed in the machine over and over (and even tumble dried) so don't use a new one every time (so much waste!!)

ImiO · 25/11/2023 10:37

@PrincessesRUs thank you for that tip - I had no idea!

I am aware about baby going underwater … going to pretend I don’t know anything and let dad get on with it. I am such an anxious mother, trying to relax…

thanks also for the reassurance on WB. They do look good!!

@DelphiniumBlue thank you! Yes as @Wahwoo mentioned, I have read / been told new babies are fine to go!

I don’t feel comfortable in a swimming suit, do you think I’ll be able to watch my little one with my husband while in the pool?
