54, Overweight, Unfit, just joined a gym!

So, as per my title, I have just joined a gym, and would like some help in knowing what equipment to use and how. I will be having an induction session, but don't want to be completely clueless when I go.
I have been doing Pilates for about 2 years, but have plateaued somewhat.
I would like to improve strength, flexibility, stamina, and of course lose weight.
Any help gratefully received!

That's great going! I signed up to twice a week for 8 weeks then I will review after that.

Well done for keeping going. I think it's easier when it becomes part of your routine.

I definitely feel better after this class than the first one, so there is hope!

DesparatePragmatist · 30/01/2024 23:24

May I join please?

56, just signed up today and I get my programme in 5 days. I'm hoping to really build up strength as a way to regain fitness, lift my mood and counter the dreaded brain fog. I pootle around with yoga and a bit of interval running at home but it's so inconsistent I'm not getting anywhere, so I hope a gym is the boot up the arse I need.

I'm actually quite excited!

DesparatePragmatist · 30/01/2024 23:25

Can I ask what specific benefits you've both seen - wellbeing, energy levels, body shape etc?

ElleLeopine · 31/01/2024 06:28

@DesparatePragmatist

I have been going regularly for a month now, and am seeing a small improvement in my weights and levels. I think it's far too early to see changes in body shape. As for energy levels, I am menopausal, so these fluctuate!
I am just pleased that I have managed to get going to the gym into my routine, and actually getting up and going on a Saturday does give me a sense of achievement.
I do hope to see changes in body shape and strength and fitness start to occur soon, but I am going with slow and steady!
What has helped the most is that a good friend joined at the same time, so we work out together, whilst chatting and putting the world to rights!

@DesparatePragmatist I would be very interested to know what program you are given? Will you share it with us?

Yes , happy to. I agree that just getting into the routine of a regular workout would be a win! I'm also really hoping that getting stronger will stabilise my joints and improve niggling knee and hip pains.

Jumping on your thread. I'm 55 post meno not on any meds or hrt. I've been going to the gym for a few weeks. I walk a lot. I'm starting to enjoy the routine of going now. I'm fairly active at work too.

Have you tried having some beetroot juice before the gym on tired days? It helps. Also keeping fluids up.

Are you on hrt @ElleLeopine ? I can't take it as it caused migraines. Shame as it did help and I have aged facially since stopping. Health is more important though.

ElleLeopine · 03/02/2024 18:51

@Ulysees hello and welcome to the thread!
I am on HRT, but it's early days, and I'm not sure how much difference it is making.
Interesting about the beetroot juice, I may have to try that!

I hope hrt helps. Menopause is no picnic!

Nortono · 04/02/2024 03:24

Def get a personal trainer to set you a programme
I see mine every half term. He reviews and resets.
its important to get your moves right

Nortono · 04/02/2024 03:25

Also. The strong app is good to log your weights it’s free for just two work outs

I paid for it yearly and it looks like this
