Weird - but vomiting after exercise class

I have been getting back into exercise and attended several exercise classes (gym based ones - like circuits).

I attended a Pilates class after work (I used to do pilates years ago). Felt nauseous during the class, powered on, but when I got home threw up and still feel wobbly and achey all over (next day). No temperature or sore throat etc.

This can’t be normal! Was it something I ate/didn’t eat? I have problems with high bp and sluggish thyroid. Wasn’t feeling tired or stressed.

Last night (early evening). Work up in night with pains in arm and jaw. Ugh

While Pilates isn't very strenuous, it can give your core a hammering if you aren't used to it. I've found that with core work, it can make me feel nauseous if I go too hard at it.

Octavia64 · 19/10/2023 12:19

Yes I have had this.

For me it was because I was doing more exercise in a particular training session than I could actually manage and I threw up.

Apparently it's a relatively common response to over training.

(I googled it after)

Other Lord! Shall I persevere / is there anything I can do in preparation of class - or give up!

I do quite a high-level pilates class (I'm the weakest one in there 😁) and very occasionally feel nauseous/light-headed after certain exercises that involve moving through different upright planes of movement quite quickly. My instructor likened it to seasickness.

The specific time I remember was after doing some rear leg lifts/aeroplane, then moving straight to doing the same thing on the diagonal, then the same thing laterally/on the side. I'm not cut out for a side aeroplane 😳 It was VERY strange but it passed, mercifully!

weemouse · 19/10/2023 12:27

I do intermediate Pilates and if I've found I get really nauseous and light headed unless I eat something extra before I go, it makes a massive difference.

Something extra protein based seems to be the trick for me, for my body to power through it

Yes it's "normal" (not commonplace though) after certain exercise routines.

Resilience · 19/10/2023 12:36

I really don't want to alarm you but nausea and pain in your arm and jaw can be indicative of heart issues. I would recommend you ring 111 rather than post on MN. Hope you're ok and it's just a one off. 💐

HoneyButterPopcorn · 19/10/2023 12:36

Now I still feel a bit wobbly - I haven’t eaten since (tummy feels ‘empty’ but I don’t fancy eating) and my jaw is aching (I assume I’ve been grinding my teeth).

I did a Pilates class at WI and felt really off afterwards. First time I'd done it though. I occasionally feel off after a really good massage.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 19/10/2023 12:38

I had a load of heart checks (monitors, clinics etc) a few months back and that came out all ok (stress related) so I jacked in a bloody awful job and my symptoms went too!

It's probably nothing but nausea and pains in arm and jaw can be a sign of heart problems, so probably a good idea to speak to GP if this recurrs.

HoneyButterPopcorn · 19/10/2023 12:40

It actually feels like a god awful hangover! The stiffness I assume is from sleeping badly and tooth grinding (which I also had when I was at my last job which was truly the worst place I’d ever worked).

I’ve had some rice pudding (my ‘poorly go to food’) so hopefully that will settle things a bit! I haven’t felt this awful for a long time.

and I thought exercise was supposed to be good for you!

Are you sure you're not just ill? I get jaw pain when my glands are up!

j1307 · 20/10/2023 13:11

Not sure how strenuous pilates is, but for rowers it's quite a common experience to throw up after a hard session on the erg. It's typically a sign that your body doesn't have enough energy left to process the food in your stomach. Make sure you get enough energy before your workouts and eat things that stay down (whole grains etc), as opposed to things your body might find easier to reject (say yogurt).

Discwriter · 20/10/2023 13:13

I throw up after spinning, but I'm massively unfit. It doesn't last overnight though, so I'd second that you probably have a bug.

GingerLiberalFeminist · 20/10/2023 13:17

Yes I had this (also a bit of syncope). It's usually overtraining and underfueling or fueling inappropriately.
Try and take it down a notch and get your blood pressure checked. Sudden posture changes can play havoc with blood pressure as well

HoneyButterPopcorn · 20/10/2023 14:11

I ate a late lunch (about 4) and have had problems with reflux before. My BP is highs anyway. Maybe a combination of these?

I think I felt wobbly the next day because I threw up long and hard, then didn’t want to eat/drink anything as my tummy and ribs were aching!
