How do you do 'weights'?

Seen on various threads people talking about doing weights as exercise.

OUTSIDE of a gym setting (I'm not joining one for various reasons - cost and location primarily)
....

How do you weights?
Any recommendations for videos / routines?

Context:
I have some dumbbells and a kettlebell. So I do have some stuff to do it with.

Whenever I have done weight lifting (based on sets and reps I've found online) - it always seems to be quite quick / doesn't raise my heart rate. Is that the way it is or am I doing it wrong?!
Is it something I need to spend lots of time doing or can it be short and sweet but regular?

HELP!

Why are PP ignoring OP's hernia situation? Why is it safe for OP with her hernia to do weights at all, much less "heavy" weights?

Because OP is responsible for herself and for taking medical advice prior to undertaking any new exercise programme. This is a chat forum, not a professional consultation.

What professional advice have you had about doing any weights, OP? How heavy, how often? Everything online is very conservative & says not to do weights at all, but of course the best action depends on your unique hernia.

Thank you - the hernia thing is totally my responsibility to navigate. I included it as context because it affects my core strength. The physio advised that the hernia will mean that my core isn't doing its job completely in keeping me upright and stable when I run - so my legs and back have to take the strain. So, in my mind strengthening back/legs and arms is a good way to try to redress this while I'm waiting for surgery (which is many many months away).

So I would avoid deadlifts or something that placed my core under significant strain (e.g. planking, crunches etc). Because the hernia is so prominent, I kind of know when I'm putting it under strain even if I can't feel it.

I haven't read the whole thread (though have seen reference to a hernia which is why I am making this caveat).

In terms of weights and heart rate, when I started working with weights my heart rate did not go very high at all during any weights session. Now my heart rate will sometimes become raised but I have now got strong enough to lift a heavy enough weight to have that effect. Before, if I wanted to raise my heart rate while using weights I would have to do high volume at a reasonably high speed. Which I don't love and therefore do cardio by other means.
