Peloton Bike Trial - toe cages or shoes?

TheRavenKing · 18/10/2023 19:08

I'm considering a trial of the Peloton Bike. But you can't apparently just use your regular running shoes or whatever - you either need to have toe cages (£25 extra) or buy cycling shoes (around £120 from Peloton). Does anyone have advice on this? If I wimp out - I will have wasted money on the shoes. If I love it I will probably need to buy the shoes anyway...? Also have you tried and returned yours? Or does absolutely everyone love it??

The shoes were great. You could look on eBay or Vinted?

TheRavenKing · 18/10/2023 23:32

Thank you - so toe cages are not good?

I got the shoes but ended up with toe cages and just wear my normal trainers, as I have feet that rub on shoes in weird places and I couldn't be bothered wearing them in.

My sister loves her shoes though and it is easy to click them in and out.

DrFoxtrot · 19/10/2023 00:21

And I got compatible toe cages from Amazon rather than anything official 😬

hm1610 · 19/10/2023 00:41

I found the peleton shoes really difficult to get to grips with clicking in and out easily (possibly didn't persevere long enough!) And subsequently bought cages from Amazon. My shoes came as part of a mother's day bundle so will likely sell on ebay as very happy with cages and my own trainers.

I think you really need to use proper cycling shoes to get the full experience of spinning.

dumdededdumdum · 19/10/2023 04:49

Shoes. Maybe half size bigger than you take. Cages for me were total faff

TheRavenKing · 19/10/2023 09:45

Thanks everyone! I think I will start with the toe cages for the trial period. That way everyone in the house can have a try of the bike. If I love the bike /decide to keep it I can try the shoes if I find the cages awkward. I also prefer to try on shoes rather than buying online. For those wearing 'normal' trainers/cages - do you use the Peloton much? Are you 'addicted' like so many reviewers online? I'm really hoping this will help me to build a regular exercise habit...

I got amazon toe cages and wear regular trainers, i can’t wear cycling shoes or clip i as my feet are knackered!

allhellcantstopusnow · 19/10/2023 09:49

I use cages at the gym and am having trouble with pins and needles/a partially numb foot after a while, I went to see a physio and they said that cages can mean you push down and through with the 'wrong' part of your foot and it can cause problems for some people.

If I had the money and space for a Peloton I'd use shoes, the pins and needles are wildly annoying!

DrFoxtrot · 19/10/2023 12:53

I am not addicted but that is more to do with my general attitude to exercise 🙈

2023shady · 25/10/2023 12:19

I use shoes, clipping in and out is easy once you have the hang of it and you can loosen them to make it easier
Yes, addicted!

TheRavenKing · 25/10/2023 15:31

Thanks everyone! I am awaiting delivery of Bike... I suspect my general attitude is closer to @DrFoxtrot but hoping this becomes addictive for me!

My tips are try a ride with every instructor to see who you click with
Hannah Corbin does great stretch classes and her 10 min barre ones wreck me Grin
Browse the collections as they're collections of themed rides - the mood ones (salty, heated, frustrated) are ones I go back to after a bad day at work

SquashPenguin · 25/10/2023 19:18

Absolutely the shoes. I used to use the cages when spinning at the gym and it was a very different (and much better) experience when I started with shoes on peloton.

DrFoxtrot · 25/10/2023 23:29

@2023shady there was a cat themed ride with cat related songs 😂

Shadesofscarlett · 28/10/2023 08:28

shoes - cages are not great if standing. I can't click in and out so leave my shoes attached to the bike.

Ebeneser · 05/11/2023 20:24

Has your bike arrived yet @TheRavenKing? I got my Peloton bike at the end of July and think it's fantastic. I went with the shoes, much better than cages. Shame I didn't see this earlier as I bought my bike with a referral code for £100 off accessories, which covered most of the cost of my shoes. I could have let you have one of my referral codes.

Anyway, make sure you watch the set up videos so you set your bike up properly to avoid any injuries (saddle too low is a common one) and be prepared for a sore bum until you get used to the saddle.

Maybe start off with the "You Can Ride" program they have. I quite enjoy the live classes if I can catch them as well.

The only thing with the bike is that you need to also pay £39 a month for the "All Access" subscription. This one sub would also include the Peloton Guide and Tread as well if you had them, plus you get full access to the app on your phone/tablet so if you bought into the whole thing it's not too bad. I see it as cheaper than a gym membership.

I have my own Treadmill (alas no room for a Peloton tread as it doesn't fold), and can connect my Apple watch to the app and use that to record the treadmill runs.

I'm doing a few of the body weight classes as well and I might try out the Yoga at some point. I try and do something at least every other day.

TheRavenKing · 06/11/2023 16:21

Hi @Ebeneser yes, bike has arrived. I went with toe cages to start with as I have never used a bike before & didn't know if I would keep it (30 day trial). I set myself a target of using it 3 times per week, but so far have used it every day -a first for me when it comes to exercise! I have been doing beginner rides (20 mins) and have been trying out different instructors/classes. I have also done the scenic rides (Scotland, Tenerife etc) which are lovely. Would like to add some arms/weights but feel like I need to get a bit more used to it all first (or at least feel like I am not doing to die lol). I will probably keep the bike so may go with shoes next but am still happy I got cages to start with since it gave me a chance to see if I like the peloton bike, and others in the house/visiting can try the bike too. Thank you everyone for advice above. So glad I tried this!

Toe cages.

I have the shoes and they are a nuisance to get off quickly of the door goes or anything.

I haven't been in my bike for over a year I need to sell it really it just being used as a clothes hangar

Shadesofscarlett · 06/11/2023 18:10

I have heard folk say toe cages are not safe when standing. Shoes are difficult to clip in and out sometimes - I just leave my shoes on the bike at all times. Lanebreak are fun too btw.

And don't forget to get app on your phone and then you can do meditations, yoga, strength, outdoor walks etc. Loads of content there. You can also access on a desktop/laptop - or cast from phone to telly. Also look at programmes at the top of the browser, collections, artist series etc. The amount of content is immense. And More Rides - you may have Disney and/or Netflix there where you can log in and Netflix and pedal if you like.

MrShady · 06/11/2023 18:38

It's definitely stuck with me. I've just done my 200th ride today Grin
