What do you wear for running in Autumn/Winter?

I have been running for a few months now, and I'm wondering what I need to invest in the running as it is getting colder and wetter. I started C25k at the end of last winter and was going out in a hoodie, but I think that now I'm running non-stop I will get completely boiling in that!

Any advice please? I am hoping to do a 10k in the spring, so will be running for up to an hour.

Last winter in the UK I wore some cheapo fleece-lined leggings from Decathlon which were great, and then either my usual short-sleeve top and a thin tracksuit top, or a long sleeve base layer from Oiselle. With a thin tracksuit top you can always roll it up and tie it round your waist as needed.

If it's raining, thin waterproof running jacket with proper vents. You'll still get wet but not chilled to the bone.

Oh! And a buff or gaiter for your neck and/or over mouth and nose if it's really freezing and windy, and I switch from a headband to a merino headband that covers my ears. I get too hot in a hat.

I still wear my leggings, same ones as summer really but maybe thicker socks.
If it's above say 6 degrees I still wear a vest as long as it isn't raining, as I soon warm up. If it's raining though I might wear a thin long sleeved top.
If it's under 7degrees I wear a think long sleeved sports top with thumbholes.
If even colder, say under 4 degrees, I have a fleece lined quarter zip running top from Decathlon.
I'll leave the house with a warm headband covering my ears, and gloves on, but these usually get removed

I guess the replies will be mixed, and it depends how cold you get!
I am actually a cold person, and wrap up for walks etc, but I hate being warm when exercising so I can't wear many layers when running

I second the fleece lined decathlon leggings recommendation; comfy, warm, and cheap!

I also have a couple of long sleeved tops like these (swear they used to do a women's version):

With a normal sports vest or t-shirt on underneath, usually end up taking the long sleeved top off at some point.

Women's Running Leggings Warm - black

Women's Running Leggings Warm - black null Brave the cold in these soft women's running leggings, designed for warmth in temperatures down to -5°C.

I’m a cold person generally but get quite hot running, I’ve rarely needed more than leggings, a long sleeved tech top, a windbreaker and gloves.
I do have a fleecy long sleeved top from decathlon and a proper thermal running top from Nike but I do need to be very cold for them as they get very warm

Kilopascal · 05/10/2023 14:16

Those Decathlon leggings sound good but I'd usually be a 10-12, and they come in 10 or 12-14. Do they run large or small, would you say?

BogRollBOGOF · 05/10/2023 15:35

Layers.
Decathlon is good for thermal and reflective gear.

Good combinations to play with:
Long sleeve t-shirt
Long sleeve thermal top
Hat/ buff/ cap
Gloves (I like fingerless cycling gloves for most winter weather)
Waterproof/ wind resistant jacket

Between those options, you'd be covered for most British winter weather short of blizzards and storms.

Warming up in the house with a short video, or doing a short warm-up loop close to home can save lugging surplus layers around after the first mile.

I have a gilet from decathlon that I wear a lot, with a long sleeve top underneath I’m good until it gets really cold.

I find gloves and a headband handy, will use them for the first 10 mins then shove in a pocket when I get hot. The sleeves usually get pushed up then as well.

Don’t forget your high viz gear.
