Best adjustable dumbbell set?

Hello - I've been working out with Caroline Girvan for a few years now and have amassed quite a collection of dumbbells. As I am moving to 12 kg and up I am wondering whether it is time to get an adjustable set?

Main criteria for me are (a) not too bulky, (b) quick and easy to adjust - if there is such a thing...

Experiences and suggestions please!! Many thanks.

Bowflex. Not cheap but best option out there

I’m interested in this too. The Bowflex ones look good.

Can I ask how it works if you want to change from say 6kg to 10kg - do you just put them back in the cradle and turn the dial to 10kg then lift out? Brilliant if so!

Thanks. I looked at the Bowflex and also the Braingain 15 which looks very similar.

Is the Bowflex very bulky? How long is a loaded bell?

I have the cast iron ones from argos- they are not bulky . They are a good price. I have 2 sets of 2x 10kg and bought 4 5kg weight plates. I am about to buy 2x 10kg weight plates and a barbell to have flexibility when it comes to hip thrusts.
Wish I could afford or had the space for individual weights. But what I like about using adjusatbles is that I have much much more flexibility as far as small incremental weight changes are concerned. This allows me to go up in weights safely. The only exercise that is tricky with them are the diamond presses, but i can live with that.

@minipie yes, that is how the Bowflex work. Into cradle, turn the dial at each end, and pick up again. The weights mostly go up incrementally in 1kg jumps, but there are some 2kg gaps.

@PaminaMozart I have the Bowflex that go up to 24kg. They are 17inches long (at any weight) and when fully loaded the width is 8 inches. They are therefore long and bulky and can be tiresome to use for some exercises because of that but I have found them to be the best compromise for having at home. Prior to them I had some cheap adjustable dumbbells from Amazon but it was an endless faff when changing the weights, having to undo each end, change plates, fasten each end again blah, blah.

Thank you, @Cranarc - that's what I'm afraid of...... the bulkiness. My son has a set which I have been trying to use, but it is just so unwieldy. I may just persist with buying more and more dumbbells...

Hi. Is there anywhere you can go and try them out? I would be worried about making a very expensive mistake. We went to that Sky Diving place in Manchester about 18 months ago and in the attached shopping centre there was a really good fitness equipment shop - Fitness Superstore (they have more branches too). They had some in there and it made me realise just how bulky a lot of these sets are and that I would not be comfortable using them. There was one set which was designed differently though and, if I had the money, I'd be buying that one. I've looked at their website just now but can't remember which one it is!

PaminaMozart · 20/09/2023 17:24

Thanks, @Anjelika - yes, being able to try them in an actual store would be ideal, but I've not found one. Was told everyone buys online...

Which is what I did. Bought a pair of 10kg from Argos and picked them up this afternoon. Will upgrade to 12.5kg as and when.

I've already found a good home for my ancient 2.5kg! 2.5kg OMG I've come a long way. My 5kg are now my lightweights...... lol

I got some adjustables from Amazon a year or so ago but they only go up to 10kg. They are really comfortable though. I only need higher for thrusts and sumo squats where 1 heavier. dumbbell is used. I just double up then.
