Keen runner and hiker here. Currently struggling with patellofemoral pain syndrome and knee fat pad impingement. 2 months since flare up, 5 weeks since I started my rehab programme. Not much progress and feeling v low! Really miss getting out for walks, let alone runs. Finding it pretty debilitating.

Could you tell me your knee injury recovery stories pls to perk me up, feel like it's never going to go away right now

Hi! Be patient! I was told I had that, but it turned out to be damage to the back of the kneecap - full thickness cracks and all sorts. Gradually stopped doing the things I love because of the pain - skiing, cycling etc. It took 10 years to insidiously creep in, all while I was thinking it was patella femoral. Eventually decided to see a consultant, had an MRI, and that showed up all the damage. In fact it wasn't patella femoral at all, just the pain was the same.

Had surgery last November, have been doing basic rehab, but recently stepped it up with a proper gym routine and it's all coming back ! I can cycle more, I'm hopefully to ski this season, I can do stairs, I can sit on the toilet - all without pain. I regretted the surgery for a while because I thought it had made it worse, but its' getting better !

Still got some tendon and fat pat inflammation and pain which can continue for a couple of years apparently, but it's a good news story otherwise.

So 10 years of pain, gradually giving up what I love, and now on the way to recovery. I'm not saying you're in for 10 years of course !!!!!! Different situation, but I know what it feels like to feel like there's no hope. Start of this year I was miserable - the surgery caused a DVT as well - the knee hurt, I thought I'd made it worse. But it has all got so much better. The gym routine was the turning point (although of course needed the surgery too).

Good luck ! I guess also don't be scared to question the diagnosis, and/or more investigations, and/or a different physio if you feel like you're not making progress.

Thanks very much for your reply. That's a long time to be out with an injury - glad to hear you're well on the road to recovery now and able to resume your hobbies.

That's great advice about a second opinion - have since booked myself in with another physio later this week

Good luck :). I only mention it because I was told it was patella femoral, so treated it like that for years. Then the consultant MRI'd and said no evidence of patella femoral at all, but plenty of evidence of cracks and nastiness........ I imagine the symptoms present very similarly.

I had ‘runners knee’ and had to stop running, couldn’t extend my knee at all and my knee kept collapsing. I went to a great sports physio and also had a steroid injection (calmed down the inflammation enough so I could do my rehab, but not a miracle cure) . I’m now back to running and don’t feel it at all. Long term strengthening those muscles around your knees will make you a stronger runner - good luck, keep at it

I had an injury (meniscus tear) and practically stopped moving due to pain. In the end I took to swimming. A lot. Front crawl (breast stroke is not good for injured knees) Strengthened my leg muscles and the pain was gone. No surgery. Even had DD2 after this, unthinkable during the period of pain!!
