Running or cycling-related present

I'd like to buy a present for a male relative , 50, who's into running and cycling. No idea what! He's got really tarty running clothes so maybe that, but wouldn't know what brand or style to choose. He's very tall, relatively slim but not skinny.

Any suggestions welcome!

What kind of cycling? You can get fancy cycling clothes but it depends what kind of cyclist he is.

EmmaStone · 17/09/2023 13:11

Rapha is a good brand for cyclists.

TR888 · 17/09/2023 13:30

Road cycling! He does cycle for hours and hours at a time...

Depending where you live you can get a voucher or just pay for it
for him to have a go in a velodrome
Manchester is about £30 that includes bike hire shoe hire hours track time and guy coaching you
done in a small group fantastic experience

rwalker · 17/09/2023 13:43

There in major cities quick google should tell u
you could pay for train ticket as well

TR888 · 17/09/2023 13:52

What a great idea! I've checked and we have a velodrome 1 hour away, which isn't too bad!

Anything Castelli is what my DH likes (road cyclist)

Runners always need more socks.

My favourite brand is Stance - this is their site, but you can find them, sometimes discounted, on loads of other sites

Socks – Stance Europe

And if you really mean tarty (not tatty) then this is one of the few places that does bright men's running tights (also double layer men's running shorts - black baggy over bright legs)

Men's Leggings for Running, Gym and Yoga (flanciactivewear.co.uk)

(Edited to correct typo)

I think gear is so so personal. Even down to socks.
There is some big name/popular stuff that I really don’t like…
Maybe a gift voucher for wiggle or an IOU for a race

MapleSyrupWaffles · 17/09/2023 15:01

does he have a bike sat-nav that he can program for longer routes and attach to his handlebars? That would use up much of the budget though!

subscription to a running or cycling magazine?

sports massage gift vouchers, or something like a bike-fit gift voucher if he ever has problems with pain or anything.

Dacadactyl · 17/09/2023 15:02

I second the idea of a velodrome experience for a cyclist. He will love it and I know this from personal experience with a male relative.

TR888 · 17/09/2023 15:44

I meant tatty - not tarty! Sorry.., thanks for the suggestions, keep them coming!

how far would he run?
Does he cycle in winter?

Some amazing full finger cycling gloves would float my boat.
5mm thick neoprene booties, ours are always getting worn out.

Circumferences · 17/09/2023 22:15

Buying clothes is very personal.
I'm a cyclist and find my lights are always running down... If you were my friend who had £100 spare I'd ask for lights 😂 but again, your friend might not need lights....

I'd go with a biking "experience" like a ticket to something....

Zampa · 17/09/2023 22:17

Tailfin panniers Very spendy but DH loves them

SausageAndEggSandwich · 17/09/2023 22:25

Socks. Stance or Balega are my favs. Monkeysox are fun if you think he'd like them. A good headtorch or bike lights or fancy hi-viz now it's getting dark?

A lot of kit is quite personal tbh, agree with pp there. It's hard for a non-sporty person to get it right.

When I was more into cycling I bought a lot of stuff from Wiggle. Now I'm mainly running it's Sportsshoes, so maybe a voucher? If there's a race or sportive you know he'd like to do often the event organisers do gift vouchers/race credit.

manontroppo · 17/09/2023 22:30

How about a great, lightweight bicycle lock? I don’t buy clothing as it’s too personal.

AuntieStella · 17/09/2023 22:32

This stuff is good, for winter after dark running and cycling:

Safety Skin - Next Generation Body Care (safetyskinproducts.com)

It's a stick of stuff a bit like body glide, but highly reflective and yes it really does do what it says (including washing off skin and out of clothes easily)

MapleSyrupWaffles · 17/09/2023 23:09

Oh, I thought of another - Proviz is great for cycling or running at night, amazing fabric for jackets and giets and hats and gloves and backpack covers and whatever else you want. It looks normal in daylight though, rather than the really obvious fluorescent high viz jackets. This just looks like normal colour jackets or silver ones, which is a lot better if you are wearing them out for the day or whatever, just look like ordinary clothes. But when headlights catch it, the whole jacket glows, as there are tiny reflectors throughout the whole fabric.
