Personal Training - Does this exist?

I am looking for a trainer who will devise an exercise programme for me and review at fixed periods. I can't commit to regular training sessions due to other commitments and financial restraints. If local, I would be willing to pay for initial 1-2 sessions in person to get to know each other but then want to pay for a programme tailored to me (working around my likes/dislikes and available equipment) and then pay for it to be reviewed. The in person sessions are not essential as I have worked with trainers in the past and am confident on my form

I don't want any form of dietary input. Most of the trainers I know of who provide programmes like the one I am looking for do it alongside diet and their primary focus (and experience) is diet and weight loss.

Does anyone have this kind of contract with a trainer?

How would the program or your performance be reviewed?

colouroftherainbow · 05/09/2023 20:55

I wasn't expecting performance to be measured if I am honest, I want something that is tailored to me and to be fit and strong. I have a fairly good idea of how heavy I can lift, when I need to push myself harder, when my form is suffering. I just don't have the knowledge to create a routine and work the right muscles

Have you thought about an app? Many of the Instagram trainers have apps now. James Smith, Alice Living, Lisa Fiitt, Shona Vertue. Prices are £12-30 a month. One like James Smith you will be allocated a trainer and they will give 6 week programs, with an app to follow certain exercises. He's the higher price range. Lisa Fitt is about £12 and you can switch from
Home workouts to Gym, whether you want to maintain muscle, or maintain, or get leaner.

An online trainer? If you're happy with online then yes there's loads that do that kind of thing. To me you're describing the main bits of what a PT does so I don't know if I'm misunderstanding?

No reason for them to talk to you about nutrition unless you want them to. It's one of my coach's specialisms but I'm with him for a different reason, he doesn't mention it to me. (He would if I asked)

hollyblueivy · 06/09/2023 07:58

I was wondering whether my gym would have any template workout plans that I could mix and match to create my own / anyone seen this before?

There are lots of online trainers. Have a look on TikTok

colouroftherainbow · 06/09/2023 08:41

Thanks all, I will check out the online trainers and apps, sounds promising that they will be able to tailor something to me and upto £30/month is reasonable (PT sessions are min £1/minute in my area which is not affordable on an ongoing basis)

My pt does online training where your plan is made just for you, you have weekly check ins and once you enter your data from your work out he will adjust your next one. Diet etc doesn’t need to be included but can be. He charges £100 a month and he’s very good.

This is exactly the kind of thing I was after. Thank you, really helpful to have an idea of the price range and to confirm it does exist

Apps like the gymshark app have training plans for free geared towards different goals, different muscle groups, different level of equipment and different amounts 3/4/5 days.

I know a guy at work who is an absolute unit who has trained for years and years. All he uses these days is the gymshark app. Its very good and free of charge. It even has full video instructions for every exercise. As long as you take it easy and ask someone (at the gym?) if you are not 100% certain about form its a cheap way of getting exactly what you need.

£100 per month for someone to write an online training plan and 'adjust' it from time to time. Really?

Its exercise. Yes we are all different but at the end of the day its certainly not rocket science. Good grief.

Thanks I'm going to take a look at this - I'm like the blind leading the blind trying to train in my gym

MegSquats Stronger by the Day is about $US100 for a year. It's not tailored to you, but it's a very good programme via an app, with lots & lots of substitutions - so you can tailor it yourself There's a 3, 4 or 5 day split, and you can do it Gym based or body-weight based.

I use it to supplement my weekly training with a PT, and it's a really good programme. Also a great online community.

You can do a 7 day free trial.

I'm not connected with the business in any way - just a woman who likes to lift heavy - I've just changed to a really serious lifting gym and the programme is working a treat!

colouroftherainbow · 08/09/2023 11:15

Thanks all. I am going to start with trying an app so thank you for the recommendations. I will go with free trial/pay for first 1-2 months and see how I like it. I have had gym memberships, used PTs, done endless YouTube workouts with variety of trainers and been to classes in the past. Using a PT is best for progress but one session each week is not enough and I can't afford that expense at the moment.

My primary focus is a structured programme that systematically works on muscle groups and it seems like many of the apps tick this box. Ideally also want to substitute hated exercises but there aren't many so will see how I go with app

Should have added the Stronger by the Day programme is designed specifically for women.

No problem. If you take a look and need any help let me know. Maybe tell me what you want to achieve or work on and what equipment you have access to and i will have a look on the app for some suggestions.

Icedlatteplease · 11/09/2023 10:40

I'm a member of bannatynes, the health smart program does exactly what your asking for as part ofthe gym membership

felisha54 · 11/09/2023 10:46

I've done this at my gym. I try and mostly do classes but sometimes the times didn't work out. I booked a session with a trainer (who I knew through classes) and she took my around the equipment (I wasn't very confident before) and gave me a programme to follow. I may book another session in a month or two to review.

Dentistlakes · 18/09/2023 04:45

There are quite a few online coaches who do the kind of thing you’re after. I think they tend to call it coaching rather than personal training (though I could be wrong!). There are also loads of apps and training programs out there too.

Have you managed to set something up?

colouroftherainbow · 20/09/2023 09:43

Sorry MN did not flag there had been replies to my posts.

@Icedlatteplease I wish there was one near me, a gym membership with this facility would be ideal!

@Dentistlakes thanks, the ones I have come across have too much of a diet focus but will continue to look

@hollyblueivy no not yet. I had started Caroline Girvan Iron series before writing the post so am seeing it through while I research my options. I am liking the look of MegSquats as they claim to offer substitutions so likely to try that before looking at pricier options

Why not take a fitness instructor training course? Then you could devise your own. I did a level 2 as an evening class at my local college.

I would love this but imagine it would be extremely expensive. Did it cost you a lot?

OP posts:
Ohwhatakerfuffle · 20/09/2023 12:22

I don’t think it was prohibitively expensive. It was a few years ago now but pretty much aligned to what I would have expected to pay for evening classes. I think it was only for a term or so, not super long.
