Do you get in 10,000 steps a day?

I don’t doubt the benefits but I’m not sure how realistic it is for lots of people. Which is obviously the problem (ie that modern life gets in the way of being active).

My kids walk themselves to school. I work mostly from home or drive to the office where I’m desk based for my full time job.

I would love to fit it in. But 90-120 mins of walking a day just seems unattainable.

Does anyone here consistently hit 10k per day? Do I need to be prioritizing this more (obviously the answer is yes)?

I do now that I have a dog but before I had her I struggled to even get 5k steps in each day as I have a job working from home sitting at a desk all day.

Nofliesareonme · 12/08/2023 12:35

3,967 steps a day has been in the news this week as being what you need to do to make a difference. 5000 seems more attainable to me so I’m trying that now as I had to give up because it was taking me a good 2hours 20 minutes to achieve 10,000 a day and was too disruptive to my days.

Strugglingtodomybest · 12/08/2023 12:36

I do because I walk the dogs every day.

I heard the other day that they're now saying that we may not need to do 10000, more like 4000.

Devon06 · 12/08/2023 12:37

Yep easily. I have five dogs ;-) I also run 5 times a week. Work full time from home and office in a desk job. I get up at 5am so that is probably how I pack it in. Could you walk part of your commute, go for walks at lunchtime, walk to supermarket instead of driving?

McOrange · 12/08/2023 12:37

Yep, every day. But I have a dog and exercise is a priority to me so I make sure i fit it in somewhere

Gahhhhhhhhh · 12/08/2023 12:38

I’ve often thought that having to walk a dog would help. We can’t currently give a dog what it would need and don’t want the extra work/commitment. DH is right when he says that I don’t need a dog to get up and go for a walk!!

Yes! I also have a desk based job and can't easily get away, so I eat lunch at my desk while I'm working and walk for my lunch hour.

Cornishtoddy · 12/08/2023 12:44

My stride means that about 2k steps is a mile.

I struggle to walk 5 miles in normal work day - more like 2-4 miles if I don't do a dedicated chunk of walking or running that day.

tracylamont13 · 12/08/2023 12:45

I typically get 12000 - 20000 but I do a manual job (gardener) and have high energy dogs to walk twice a day.

THATissoooFETCH · 12/08/2023 12:45

On a work day i usually do over 15k

Staying in the house maybe 5 or 6k

bakewellbride · 12/08/2023 12:46

I walk absolutely everywhere, probably every easily double 10,000 a day.

megletthesecond · 12/08/2023 12:48

Always. My target is 14k. I've already done my 14k today.
I walk to the supermarket most days and walk to the office twice a week. I get vitamin D too.

ladygindiva · 12/08/2023 12:51

I try to achieve 10000 steps daily if I've not achieved that then in the evening I put the clean laundry ( downstairs) away in the drawers/ wardrobes ( upstairs) one item at a time; with my step counter in my pocket, that usually does it 🤣

Gnomegnomegnome · 12/08/2023 12:51

I have a mostly desk job and wfh 80% of the time but go to the gym three times a week before work (6:30am)and walk for an hour after work (usually after 6pm) I average around 14k a day.

Tilllly · 12/08/2023 12:53

Mostly but I go out of my way at work - go downstairs to the loo, use a copier that's further away and so on

DustyLee123 · 12/08/2023 12:54

Most days I do. If I’m low on steps I go out for a 30 minute walk.

TheDuchessOfMN · 12/08/2023 12:57

On a work day, I’m already on 10k before I leave.

On a lazy day at home, I might only get 5k, but I’ll purposely go for a long walk to go over 10.

I’m trying to lose weight at the moment, so I’m aiming for 15,000 every day. I wear my Fitbit every day.
I am on 6,000 now. I got up early this morning and went for a 45 minute walk.

The question of how many steps we need to walk per day is a fallacy. The number was dreamed up by the manufacturers of tracking devices. It has no basis in science apart from the 'eat less, move more' mantra which has also been debunked. Check it out, do your own research.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 12/08/2023 13:01

On work days I do because I walk a big chunk of my commute to avoid traffic and because I like walking over the Thames. On non-work days it varies - DS is walk resistant these days.

VaggieMight · 12/08/2023 13:04

10k steps strolling on flat is not as beneficial as 5k quickly with some uphill. So if you don't have much time, make your walks more challenging.

nicestcelebs · 12/08/2023 13:04

Yes.

I do a very sedentary job so it's really important that I exercise and also get my steps on top.

I will march around the room I'm in for ten minutes between appts if I need to.

You beat me to it.

Yes at the very least. I walk the dogs twice a day for 45mins or 2 hours of going on more a trek.
I couldn't live any other way I'd feel depressed and unwell. If you have time for watching a bit of tele everyday or other down time then switch that up with going for a nice evening stroll and listening to a podcast or music on the way.

Inmybirthdaysuit · 12/08/2023 13:17

Most days it would be about 12-14k. I have a hip problem that flares up though so days like today when I'm in pain and walking with a limp it'll be more like 6. I have 2 little dogs so don't get to opt out of walking altogether.

spotnoodle · 12/08/2023 13:18

I hit about 18k steps on a slow day but i have a springer spaniel! Before i had a dog i wouldn't have got 10k a day. I get up at 6am and walk him for an hour. Repeat that at 1-2pm then a potter around the block at night. Plus I'm a primary school teacher AND i have two young kids.
