What sport or fitness did your mum do?

My mother was born in the 1940s. When I was a child (1970s), my mother regularly did ... swimming, tennis, jogging, cycling, softball, horse-riding, aerobics, yoga, walks. + random other fitness or sport.

My dad's mom didn't do sport, my other grandmother (short person!, born 1900s) used to coach basketball as an adult, and rode horses as a youngster. I'm not aware she did any other sport, though.

Did your mum do any fitness or sport?

Grays perhaps that's why I have no interest in sport or exercise Blush - the complete opposite to my DPs who were very fit and sporty. Fortunately my own DS takes after DH who is into sport.

I remember her doing the class they had on TV each morning, all ten minutes of it. Was it Lizzie? Liked a unitard!

NeverDropYourMooncup · 05/08/2023 19:36

Walking to the shops and back. And taking the amphetamines that were prescribed to her so she'd 'get her figure back and manage with 4 under 5'.

She was diagnosed with osteoporosis aged 37.

Get that weightbearing exercise, everybody. And eat.

Born 40s- a lot of walking and cycling, swimming, keep fit and yoga since it was still quite unusual. Now 3x weekly gym classes- I think a mix of zumba, aerobics and circuit training. All aimed at 60+ women and it's great to see her keep so active in her 70s (hope that's not patronising but none of her or my dad's family exercised outside of maybe walking the dog).

My mum was a PE teacher so did loads, also played badminton in the evening for fun.
I loved it - I used to go and hit tennis balls against a wall at her school while she was doing Afterschool clubs, and I can still hear her sayings in my head when I’m playing sport. She also did various sporting holiday clubs for local kids.

My mother was born in the 1920s. She could play tennis but didn't do it regularly. I don't know what else she did before having us kids. She and I used to go swimming together in my teens and I fondly remember the rubber bathing caps with flowers stuck all over them!
She was a walker - every day she'd stride out. In her early 80s she had a couple bad falls though - tripped on a paving stone broke her arm and clavicle. Never really recovered from those.
My Dad did rugby and all sorts at school and was a very good tennis player. He had a freak accident when he slipped on court at the age of 77 - required 17 stitches across his scalp. He played a bit after that but died at 79.

DM was born in 1945 and played a lot of netball, she was pretty good and her team played at a decent level. Me and DSIS played too, and there was a point in time when we all played on the same team. When DM stopped playing she coached for quite a while - let me tell you it is no fun playing for a team your DM coaches 😬

None, but she was obsessed with her weight so ate very little. She did walk a lot. Being healthy to her was being slim, even though she must have been deficient in a lot of things.

She thought I was odd to do lots of exercise and sport and actually eat.

My Mum was born in 1953 and has just turned 70. She has always exercised, when I was young she played hockey, squash and tennis. She would cycle to work and if she hadn't managed any exercise in the day she would go for a run or a swim at night. She has just turned 70 and would be lost without either a game of tennis or golf or both everyday!

MintJulia · 05/08/2023 19:45

She didn't have a car so a lot of walking - shopping - school runs etc.

And running a house for 7 must have been fairly exhausting too

ProfYaffle · 05/08/2023 19:46

In the 70's 'doing exercise' as a specific activity wasn't really a thing in the working class area I grew up in. I guess when a lot of people had physical jobs it wasn't needed either.

My Mum started doing yoga in the upstairs room of the pub where she worked. It was seen as very modern and quite fancy/perplexing. She carried on doing various classes from there, progressing through fashions as they came and went -aerobics, keep fit, legs bums and tums, step, body pump, zumba etc.

She's mid 70s now and way fitter than me.

Boodahh · 05/08/2023 19:47

Mum was born in the 40s, Cycled a lot at one point.

A friends mum went to exercise classes with The League of Health and Beauty which always sound very glamorous.

Zipps · 05/08/2023 19:48

My mum is surprisingly fit in her late 80's and her sport is bridge, dominoes and cards! She thinks sport is something that you watch other people do. She loves watching everything - football, tennis, cricket, Olympics etc but has barely even walked anywhere since her twenties. We all walked ourselves to school.

hattie43 · 05/08/2023 19:52

My mum born in the forties did lacrosse, horse riding and swimming .

Maggiesgirl · 05/08/2023 19:58

Born in 1932, and was in the WRAF when she met my Dad who was RAF. She ran hurdles then. We lived Singapore off and on till 1974 where she golfed and swam.

Once we came home and Dad left the RAF, she brought all 5 of us and was never off her feet and didn't really do any organised exercised.

We all swam competitively until our late teens.

Ethelswith · 05/08/2023 19:59

She was born in the 1920s

I remember her doing keep fit classes, walking everywhere and gardening (including the vigorous stuff like digging)

She liked swimming (would do loads on holiday) and horse-riding

When she was a girl, she had a pony, walked miles with her dog, and went sailing (stayed with her granny at the Norfolk Broads)

She's now frail, and has significant mobility issues. I really wish I could see her do this again!!

Neither parent exercised at all, although my mum did walk a fair bit. She still walks a lot and is fit and healthy in her 70s but she isn’t strong.

I was terrible at school sports/team games and was a chubby teenager and into young adult. I did no exercise until after I had my children in my late thirties and then somehow got into it. I’m late forties now and do weights/kettlebells/HIIT and Pilates. I work with older adults now and the impact lifestyle has on health is really evident so I am determined to remain fit and active.

Comefromaway · 05/08/2023 20:00

My mum was born in the early 50s and she swam for the county.

Goneback2school · 05/08/2023 20:01

My mum does more exercise now than she did when she was younger. She was born in the late 50's but when we were young would only have had time for a daily walk. Now she walks, does spinning and other high intensity exercise classes either in person or with youtube, she regularly goes on hiking holidays. She has hiked in South America, Spain and made it to Everest base camp all in the last 10 years.

It would have been Mad Lizzie, or the Green Goddess

Or Mr Motivator (who returned to our screens during lockdown)

Born late 1920s. Cycling and walking as a child; did 'keep fit' at local hall when I was young. I think also a bit of badminton. As we grew up, swimming with us in the sea, walking. In later life, Scottish dancing, walking, swimming

Cocopogo · 05/08/2023 20:06

Exercise videos, horse riding, swimming, cycling, line dancing

FijiSea · 05/08/2023 20:06

My mum did “ keep fit “ or “ aerobics “ and wore the Lycra leggings with contrast thong bodysuit and Reebok hi tops 😆
Also step aerobics too , branded Reebok steps think they were purple and turquoise from memory.
We used to be allowed to hang around the back of the hall while the mums were doing the workouts 😆

Yoga and dog walking. I went to a fabulous yoga class with her as a teenager, and I've never managed to find a teacher as good again, 25 years and dozens of teachers later. Maybe it's like drugs, the first high is the best!
