Tracking weight lifting weights

I go to a small group strength and conditioning training class that involves a lot of weight lifting (squat, RDL, deadlift, rows, flys, etc) and I can't mentally keep track of what weight I've used for each exercise from class to class. It can sometimes be a couple of classes before coming back to an exercise which doesn't help. So I've been keeping a record in my notes app on my phone but it's hard to scroll through to find each exercise when I'm getting my station set up. Does anyone have an app or even a layout I could put in a paper notebook and bring with me? I'm really drawing a blank on how to do this!

I used to use the app train to log stuff. There's also other apps that do similar things. I've also carried round a little notebook before. Just write the name of the exercise and have columns for the weight?

EllaMenopee · 27/07/2023 13:16

Maybe I'm over thinking it. The apps I've looked at all seem to be for user inputted programs/solo gym sessions but as mine is a class I don't know til i get there what I'll be doing. The Google results for training logs were similar and generally very fancy lay outs! I think like you a notebook and page per exercise with weight and reps might be easiest...

I have a book I fill in at home but I text myself the weights, reps and sets I have done while I'm at the gym. Then I screenshot the weights etc at the start of the next gym session so that I know what I did last time.

Kitcaterpillar · 27/07/2023 13:41

If you use 'Strong', there's a search function so it would be quick to find the previous weight, even if you hadn't done it for a while.

Train you select the exercise and the weight and it counts your reps, if you have an apple watch (other smart watch?) it also auto detects the exercise. No programme to input or work through or anything like that. I used to use it to track workouts that were on a sheet my gym gave me. Never input the workouts into the app first.

EllaMenopee · 27/07/2023 14:08

OK, thanks, I'll have a look at those apps. I don't have a smart watch. I was thinking about the text/notebook/screenshot option too, but I know I'd miss a step so probably better just to bring the book either me!

Spreadsheet with a list of each exercise in column A and then the weight you last did going along the columns?

hamstersarse · 27/07/2023 17:02

I use Rep Count app which is free

you can create a workout with all your common exercises on it and the weights you’ve done, record it, then duplicate it for your next workout so you can see previous weight and reps

Have a look at the FitNotes OP

It's basic but quick and easy, and because there are no fancy graphics or video it loads in an instant and it takes just a few seconds to log a whole session.

Then when you open an exercise, there is a history tab which shows you at a glance what you did the previous sessions (and tells you if you're logging a new personal best)

I have been using it for years, and have tried other things on and off but always go back to FitNotes because it just works for me

I was trying to attach screen shots but they seemed to have gone missing from my post 🙈

My gym has a notebook for each person, it's a very simple system. Each day just write out the date and specific lift and the sets you did, both warm up and working (and any other info that's useful, e.g. if the box size changed for squats, how you found it). Then you update each time! You can add a score out of 10 as well for difficulty so you can judge the next lift. Plus if you write it out in advance you get to tick off the sets as you do them!

This is what I had in mind, thank you!

Am I weird? (I feel like I must be after reading this thread).

I usually remember what my weights are, and on the rare occasion I don't, I load my bar etc and do a test rep to see how it feels then go heavier/lighter/leave it alone. I always remember my PBs.

Depends how you train. Sometimes rep range will change and so will weight. Sometimes I'm doing linear progression so the weight changes every week. Sometimes I'm doing drop sets as a % of a top set. I'm not doing my PBs every session.

I'll remember a big lift but what I set the stack to on a tricep pushdown? No. A mystery.

QueenBitch666 · 28/07/2023 03:00

I use a note note book to track my weights and usually workout at 80% of my pbs

MistyTrains · 28/07/2023 10:34

My trainer uses Trainerize. But when it comes to the gym I use Color Note (my sticky notes app) where I have written them down. There are not that many and it usually starts with the compounds. The note is saved as a widget on my screen.

In your case, I think maybe don't reinvent the wheel...could you put them in alpahbetical order?

EllaMenopee · 28/07/2023 13:38

@PenelopeTheShroudWeaver the app worked really well last night, thanks for the suggestion.

@HundredMilesAnHour I wish I could remember what weights I did before! The class is very mixed so might not do eg lat pulldowns for 4 sessions, so I definitely don't remember what weight I used. And one class might do deadlifts and another rdls which I have different weights for. Not to mention my memory is shot to hell these days...

You're welcome OP @EllaMenopee , I'm glad it worked out!

I can't remember my weights either usually. I'm a powerlifter, so obviously I know my 1RM for squats bench and deadlift but other than that, there is no way I'd remember what weights I used for my accessories, especially as they change quite a bit, or use different rep ranges. Also I'm old and brain fog is real 😁

Soapyspuds · 02/08/2023 23:44

Notebook and pen. Less techy but far easier to manage than writing it out on your phone.
