Weighted vest for walking?

I really need to up all aspects of weight training and strength. I'm about to have a lumpectomy or mastectomy with reconstruction. Then likely to go on tamoxifen. I'm dreading all of it as have already struggled so much in the last few years.

I have hypermobility and hypothyroidism, asthma too and from experience can deteriorate quickly into an exhausted painful mess. I'm on the slimmer narrower side though found a few extra pounds of weight hard to shift in the last few years. (Only 9 stone instead of 8.5! But I'm better at 8.5.) I've struggled on in the past decade juggling kids and work etc and ended up very unwell at times. Exercise went out of the window in tbe last few years tbh and pandemic and crippling brain fog didn't help there.

I am on hrt which has really helped and was about to embark on a lot of exercise anyway now that I had more energy and better sleep. Except I'm not going to have that now.

I want a simple way to add some things into everyday life and as I walk the dog three times a day (length varies) wondered if a weighted vest would be a good addition to walks. We've only had her a few months and my legs have definitely improved. I think testosterone did too. (Weeps again)

I used to love walking while baby wearing; it felt like my back was getting an appropriate work out. Especially when on the front. She likes to walk fast and I know walking can be v beneficial.

Is this something that works or does it actually do more damage?

I'm going to start swimming again as I know that helps lungs and was always my go to. I have some weights and a good book recommended here for older ladies getting strong (can't remember it's name.) (I'm only in my 40s 😭)

I have a 15kg weighted vest and really like using it in the winter - it’s a bit warm now though. I’d be really really careful though if you’re having breast surgery because of the risk to your wounds - definitely talk to your surgeon about it. Maybe ankle/wrist weights would be better?

Good point; I was thinking in the run up to surgery though. Have to do x3 walks a day of varying amounts so May as well have weight.

I wasn't sure if ankle weights are ok for walking?

Ankle weights are really hard on the joints (knee especially) add to that hyper mobility and it sounds like a high potential for ligament and cartilage damage.

What about a backpack with books or other items in it?

I know somebody who used to run with a hoover in his rucksack....!

Yes that is what I wondered
