Weights-how to start

lastminutewednesday · 11/06/2023 14:17

Just that really. I'm trying to lose some weight but also improve health and strength. I walk 2-3 Hours a day through work, but I would also like to start doing some weights-at home, not in the gym.

I'm incredibly weak anyway but I also shattered my wrist 18 months ago so that side is even more rubbish in terms of lifting anything-it's healed up but is still weaker than the normal wrist.

I don't know where to start-has anyone any advice?

This lady I find quite good and she has lots of different weight workouts to choose from.

Ideally for weights go to sone classes or a trainer who can help you with a programme

Ideally you would also be getting decent physio from the NHS or privately

Assuming that's all a bit pricy ..

For your wrist - search something like NHS physio wrist - they have a load of good physio programmes on line these days - that should be your priority

Then weights - you can start with body weight only and then build to baked bean tins or bags of sugar before thinking about actual weights

There are good online videos - again I think the NHS may have a starter program

Then progress to something on YouTube like Caroline girvan beginner epic , or Amy ??? Or possibly joe wicks ( not tried )

you could just do the body weight ones until you have wrist strength to hold weights

You could start with body weight movements, and making sure they're full body such as squats or press ups. And you can also do really functional movements. Things like "farmer's carry" ball slams, wall balls, pushing and pulling a sled, or a car tyre or whatever. Functional moves are good in

Two online fitness people who really know their stuff:
Megsquats (YouTube, Instagram, and specific programming via her app Stronger by the Day)
Jason and Lauren Pak (on Instagram as Jasonandlaurenpak and specific programming via their app Rise)

Megsquats has a free training programme specifically for women who haven't done weights before called Before the Barbell

It's excellent.

The main thing to develop strength is you need a programme which includes progressive overload - that is, each week, add a bit of weight to each exercise.

Have a look at the long-running Caroline Girvan thread on here and check her out on Youtube. Many people like to start with her Iron series as it's not too long per workout.
