I'm unfit and need to improve strength and build some muscle

I know what a bicep curl is but that is literally it

Can anyone advise a beginners programme that's super easy to follow?
Thank you

When you are doing your bicep curls, don’t let your arm touch your body, keep it slightly away. Knees slightly bent, tummy in, shoulders relaxed.

Something like this could be good if you have hand weights

Or if you go to the gym you can ask any of the staff there to help you or book a personal trainer session. It’s important to maintain good form so you avoid injury.

Start with light weights and then build it up over time.

Will you be going to a gym or working out at home?

FelicityFeatherstone · 29/05/2023 21:51

Thanks for the suggestions so far

It'll be at home. I do belong to a place with a gym but it's mainly a spa type place so I only use that for swimming

I do have hand weights so it'll be at home and I just want something easy for me to follow but also effective

Ideally get advise - a one of personal trainer session or a few body pump classes

Alternative you tube - Caroline girvan has a beginner series
Just watch the first time , do the moves without weights to learn the shapes and then start really light

Pay close attention to detail -which way round the hands are , the bend on knees and elbows, holding the tummy in and not letting back sway, when is back straight or curved , how knees don't roll in but stay over toes

Doing it right gets you better results and avoid injury

Maybe start with some body weight exercises to build your confidence. There's lots of stuff on you tube if you take a look. Just keep it simple to begin with

Buy a peloton guide. It's a couple of hundred quid but has easy to follow classes and tracks your reps.

Have a look at MegSquats on YouTube and Instagram. She has a free programme called “Before the Barbell” with good coaching and advice. The main thing is to have a programme with “progressive overload” so you gradually increase the weight you’re using.

The other thing is that bicep curls are fairly pointless in isolation. Much better to do full body moves such as squats and lunges, to which you can add weight as you progress.

For example, for the full body version of a bicep curl, try a curl to overhead press. Or a thruster squat with dumbbells. You can find examples on YouTube.

I recommend seeing a professional, even if only for a few sessions. I've joined a basic £20 a month all classes included gym recently and quickly learnt that things I thought you can't get wrong, like how to hols a dumbbell I was doing wrong.
