Any runners still running after Plantar Fasciitis?

I have been diagnosed with the dreaded Plantar Fasciitis 😞

i genuinely thought I was pretty sensible. Run my easy / recovery runs at the correct pace, do strength work religiously, concentrate on my ankle / calf flex, wear Oofos, rotate trainers and still I’ve ended up with PF.

Currently gone down a Reddit rabbit hole with runners that have basically had to give up or not ran for several years - has anyone had PF any recovered / managed it to keep running?

Mine has never gone away through rest. I run 3miles+ 4x a week and avg 17k steps a day. Sometimes it's a bit painful at the start of a run but soon goes away.

I run in asics with an additional insole in. Crocs round the house make a massive difference and I do stretch my calves if I've been sitting for a while.

Thanks @PlantPlug im reading that’s it’s good to keep active but I have been advised to stay low impact for a while 😔 Mine also doesn’t go away at the moment. Might look at orthotics too, I’ve always been told better to address the imbalance rather than use insoles but I’m willing to try anything now!

me & loads I've talked to. It took a while.... Everyone I talk to thinks a different thing (exercise, gadget, habit, shoe) cured it or got it good enough. Total trial & error.

It's linked to Achilles tendonitis for me so i have to manage for the AT more than the PF nowadays.

I now tend to run in winter & cycle in summer to reduce injury risks from over-use.

MarbleOfPain · 19/05/2023 14:24

That’s interesting @lljkk do you still have heel pain, or something else? The consultant is 95% sure it’s PF, but mine isn’t quite the typical symptoms. It all seems very much a trial and error process 😫

I got it years ago (maybe eight years) and stretching on a slant board and Fitflop shoes for work and at home seemed to cure it after a few months. I've been running more or less non-stop since.

It only starts off again if I wear unsuitable shoes for a few days running or neglecct the slant board (ours is next to the coffee machine to stand on while we wait :D )

MarbleOfPain · 19/05/2023 14:36

Off to order a slant board thanks @Trickedbyadoughnut thats really good to hear you’ve been back running. I’m supper concerned this may be the end - turns out I need running for a lot more than my fitness!

I'm also convinced I triggered it by wearing ridiculous high shoes for a day out with a lot of walking recently 😫

I had plantar last year. Don’t know how I got it but it stuck around for a couple of months then disappeared again . Didn’t really change anything stretched a bit more but that was it. I also run through it like the previous poster it hurt for the first km or so but then was fine

MarbleOfPain · 19/05/2023 15:15

Thanks @Puravida23 mine doesn’t go when I run, that’s the annoying thing! I did keep running and it didn’t get any worse after but the run itself was pretty horrible 🫤

Can anyone recommend a good slant board? A friend's birthday is coming up, she's newly diagnosed with PF, and I might get one for her

Are the socks for overnight any good?

kokotheguerilla · 19/05/2023 15:27

Yes, I suffered for about 6 months then stopped running for about 6 months. Changed brand of trainers, did heel drops off stairs and lots of calf stretches. Took up yoga. It occasionally twinges again if I up mileage too fast but I’ve got bigger issues than that now I’m old (namely arthritic hips!).

It's all Achilles Tendonitis if I get a flare up. No bottom of foot pain or so minimal I don't notice. I'm not good on anatomy but I guess Achilles relates to tendons on bottom of foot.

Friend has defatting in her feet, lost some of the fat that pads the feet. this sounds horrible. I am Grateful for problems I don't have.

dancinggoosey · 20/05/2023 19:42

A friend had to have it lasered to get rid of it. It worked and hasn't returned.

Cornishromcom · 20/05/2023 19:42

I can only run bare foot now. So I only run on hard wet sand :(

BriarHare · 20/05/2023 19:50

I’ve had it twice. The pain! It’s excruciating.

This is not the way to do it, but my husband had strong prescription meds for a prolapsed disc. I used to pop a couple of those and run through the pain. Mine resolved both times in about a month.

Boiledeggandtoast · 20/05/2023 20:19

I developed it last October, following on from problems with my calf muscles when running and a burning heel when I stretched. I had a couple of sessions with a sports physio who was great and gave me a series of exercises which I followed religiously for about 4 months during which time I cycled but didn't run. I still do the exercises, but not as often, and am back to running 5k (which is as far as I ever run!) Like a pp I run in Asics.

Tinytigertail · 20/05/2023 20:34

I've had it twice and am still running. Recovery was quite slow, but I'm back to pre PF levels now.

Octomingo · 31/05/2023 08:45

I developed peroneal tendinitis 3 years ago, thanks to taking up running without proper shoes. The pain starts on the outside left ankle and radiates under my heel. I also have hypermobile feet, which doesn't help.

I think my latest attack is from wearing fucking ballerina flats in work, because I must roll my ankle. 2 weeks without running has nearly killed me, but I strapped myself up and tried today and it was ok. Pisses me off that I do more damage NOT while running.

MarbleOfPain · 31/05/2023 10:09

Thanks for sharing all, simple positives to take! I’m booked in for shockwave therapy next week so will report back 🤞
