Where to begin?

I'm 46, nearly a stone overweight. I am relatively active with my kids but I haven't done any proper exercise myself for almost a year.

I need to be healthier and would love suggestions of programs etc that are good for a middle aged relative beginner, looking to rebuild fitness and create a routine.

Any suggestions please? Where would you start if you were me?

What does 'fit and healthy' mean to you? What will you be able to do (or do better), and how will your body be different when you have achieved your aim?

It's good to narrow it down... there's lots of ways to be fit (fit for what?) and lots of parameters for 'health'.

This is about you.

I would start with the NHS guidelines and make sure those boxes are ticked.

So a brisk walk five days a week and two Pilates sessions, say, would cover that. I walk fast, with trainers and gym kit on, up hills when I can and with no bag or little rucksack. It is great exercise, and I say that as someone who strength trains quite seriously, and runs (not seriously 😀).

If you already do that then you can step it up - try C25k to ease you into running, say. Or try a new class or activity - park bootcamp or boxing or tai chi, swimming, whatever you might enjoy and that might work for you. Just make sure those heart rate raising activity and strength boxes are ticked and you can try different things/increase and decrease.

There are lots of recommendations on these boards for online stuff - I rate Lottie Murphy on youtube for Pilates.
