Sweepers at event - where they being inappropriate?

I did a long distance event a couple of weeks ago, but something has really played on my mind since. It was a mass start and after a couple of hours I was last, but not going at a slow pace, others were viewable in front and I was well within finishing within the time limit. I was doing the shorter distance and therefore nothing to worry about.

I am female and was doing the event solo. I was really enjoying it to clear my mind as had an unbelievably stressful few weeks. The whole day was much needed for my mental health. It was by the sea and was so refreshing.

Suddenly two men appeared at a fast pace behind. They were sweepers of the event and they were walking right in my personal space, one either side of me and talking over my head. I felt like I was being frog marched by the police. I asked who they were and they said sweepers for the event. They were then being a bit condescending with their comments towards me about my "last" position. The main issue I have is that they were walking so close that I tripped over them twice, ended up on the floor and I kept having to stop as they were veering in front of me. I politely told them they were making me stressed walking so close and suggested they gave me some personal space. The man responded that they were not allowed to, they had to walk right by me. I told them very clearly I did not need any help, but everytime we came to a point where I needed to refer to the map they didn't give me a chance and told me where to go. They ended up on the receiving end of my sharp tongue and all went silent.

My question is, were they bring inappropriate as sweepers to the event. My friend says I should complain about them.

That sounds awful I would definitely complain especially if you were within the time limit x

FabFitFifties · 01/05/2023 11:10

Soynds awful, please complain

Kittykatchunjy · 01/05/2023 11:13

That's absolutely dreadful, I would be complaining too. London Marathon organisers took a lot of rap a few years ago over hassling back runners, they've totally changed their tune now, perhaps remind these organisers of this. Just horrible.

Barold · 01/05/2023 11:13

Yes, you should complain! How dare they overstep your boundaries like that and condescend you when you spoke up.

I totally get as sweepers they had a job to do, but my main issue was they were walking soooo close, they could have done the same thing from 20 metres back, but they declined to do this and carried on almost body touching me. It was a wide open space and totally inappropriate.

Yeah I would definitely complain. If you're on Instagram, check out she.races - this is exactly the kind of thing they want to hear about, events which put women off through macho behaviour either deliberately or inadvertently.

I thought I was going to read about someone with large brooms sweeping the street next to you?

I've never heard of 'sweepers' like this, but then, I've never competed in a marathon/sports event you are eluding to. Did you see any badges or names for these men? I'd complain to the organisers.

MucozadeOnLucozade · 01/05/2023 17:27

Sometimes called back walkers, last walkers, tailgaters, sweepers....

Something similar happened to me once, they were just too close and trying to start a conversation. Not inappropriate in any way but just too close for me to feel comfortable

Like you there were people not far ahead so not like I was miles behind. Luckily I overtook some of them and was able to get away from then

MucozadeOnLucozade · 01/05/2023 20:35

What happened in the end is that when we got to the checkpoint, I didn't stop as some like to take a long rest break and I got rid of them! Good luck to whoever had them.

The event was about 7 hours long and no loos on route either, so was so embarrassing if I had to go for a wild wee!

Am I the only person that took ages to realise that ‘long distance event’ meant sporting/ running event? 😆

I had thought it could have been a clumsy way of phrasing a ‘work trip’ or a video conference.

I was trying to decipher what they were finishing 😂

MucozadeOnLucozade · 01/05/2023 22:23

Ha ha ha ha!!!!!

Tripping you up!! Of course, complain.

biehrvduevr · 07/05/2023 17:57

Urgh. I have a feeling I know the type of event you're referring to. Definitely not ok. I've marshalled at marathons/ultras and there are cut off times which the runners know.

There is no need whatsoever to be so pushy about being 'last' etc. absolutely unacceptable.
