New running shoes

Hello,

So my ASICS nimbus are dead since the marathon on Sunday: wet, smelly, and holes in the toes! I hadn’t realised they were so close to their end! I did get on with them but they never felt very giving, if you know what I mean?

I need new trainers. I’ve previously had Saucony (which did seem to last much longer than the ASICS), but I’ve since seen newer brands like Hoka, with a much plushier looking sole.

Any advice fellow runners? I won’t be doing another 26.2 miles in a hurry but definitely will be running regularly. I have a fairly narrow foot but otherwise a fairly normal gait.

I have loved hokas and addidas ones recently. Went to a running shop and on the running machine. Love a new pair of running shoes. Well done on the marathon :)

Congrats on the marathon! I have wide feet and only run short distances (5k, 10k), but have just bought my first pair of Hokas and love them. Super cushioned and hug my feet well. Like the pp, I went to a running shop and tried on lots of pairs on the running machine. The Hokas were best.

I liked Asics - I had Dynaflyte but I didn't think they lasted well

Hoka are worth a look, and the other brand I like is Mizuno

(I've been reading "We Can't Run Away From This" about the environmental impact of running. I'll see which brands get decent mention in that, if you like).

I had Asics at first for my road shoes as I was advised to get them because I overpronate massively (and am chubby), but they were really too hard for me. I've New Balance since - went and tried a bunch of others in a shop a couple of weeks ago. The Hokas weren't a bad shoe on me but I just loved the new soles (Fresh Foam) on the New Balance (860s for me and my pronation). I've done a few 5ks since getting them and no breaking in needed.

Probably best to go to a running shop and try out different styles on the treadmill - you don't necessarily need to buy them there, you can come home and check out the best prices online.

Shoes are so individual to each person - what some love others hate. I've got trainers that are lovely and comfy for a long walk but not supportive enough for running.

I like Brooks but get to a specialist running shop and ask their advice.

nbee84 · 02/05/2023 21:17

And my favourites are Brooks Ghost or Glycerin, I don't get on with Hoka's or Saucony.

Alittlebitofthis · 02/05/2023 21:19

I just got a pair of brooks glycerin GTS 20! They're support and cushioned. They're so comfy.
As someone said above though, best going to a specialist shop. I tried on a couple of pairs and these were the best fit for me.

My last pair were saucony but they weren't right for me.

Saucony Omni 20 serve my narrow feet well. I over pronate and was just finding Asics hard and expensive. I’m currently training for a half marathon.

DaysofHoney · 03/05/2023 22:43

Thanks everyone, running shop it is! Never heard of Brooks, will look them up.

I have 3 different pairs of Brooks; they suit my running style and feet well. I did try some Hokas on in the shop but really didn't get on with them
I'd go to an independent running shop and get their opinions.
Try multiple pairs on...the shop will be used to bringing out boxes and boxes for runners!

TabithaBraithwaite · 20/05/2023 20:43

I got the hoka Clifton 9.
Went to a running shop and they have a running track - had to run across a pad and they analysed my usual running shoe and then made me run in 3 different pairs they brought out to try. Really interesting to see the map of my foot with the colours of Weight distribution etc. you could clearly see which shoe worked best for my running style.
highly recommend a proper fitting
good luck and happy running

I'd always run in asics until last summer when I wanted to see what else was out there (as I was also about to train for a marathon - well done its hard!). The shop I went to put me in some Hoka Cliftons and they are really lovely - bouncy and fun to run in (and the current season have some lovely colour combinations...). I'd never go back.

BurntOutGirl · 22/05/2023 18:42

I wear Mizuno waverider and have Brooks Trail shoes
