Does anyone else not get an endorphin rush after excercise

I get a good feeling of accomplishment after exercise, I'm glad I did it. But I have never had that "high" rush of endorphins that people talk about. I do a mix of cardio and strength training 6 days a week. Anyone else? I've never been a huge fan of exercising but I'm in my mid 30s now and it's not as easy to eat what I want and stay slim so it's a needs must situation and I have finally found a type of exercise that I like so that makes it easier to do, but I would love to finish a workout and feel that rush that people talk about.

I don’t. I just feel a ‘thank goodness it’s over’ relief. I’m having to think about exercise as I approach 40 and it’s not filling with with joy…wish it did!

Niceweatherseeker · 01/04/2023 12:21

And nothing is more depressing than going to a godforesaken spin class and seeing you have burnt off a kit Kat’s worth of calories. Hardly seems worth it!

I think the nearest I've ever got to the endorphins is the post exercise "thank god that's over with" feeling

Same

I hate it

I do it cos I need to to be healthy

You must feel fitter and stronger when going about your daily life, though, even if you don't get the immediate high?
I've been exercising more than usual as a result of suddenly thinking 'shit I'm getting old' and being stronger and fitter just makes everything easier, even walking upstairs 😂

PlainSkyr · 01/04/2023 12:25

When I first started exercising regularly I'd be EXHAUSTED at the end of it and need some good food with rest. Ideally do nothing much for couple hours after.
After around 6-8 months of this is when I started to not feel tired, rather feel energised/feel the rush of exercise. I think it comes down to how fit you are. The more fit, the more you are pushing yourself outside your comfort zone and hence greater the rush.

Couldn't have imagined doing a morning HIIT workout and then going to work but now I can and love it! I feel pumped up for the day and do loads more on that day.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 01/04/2023 12:26

Never had it. I feel mildly energised and relaxed, but not that BOO-YA! RAAARH!!! feeling other people seem to get.

GreyShepherd · 01/04/2023 12:26

Me too, even when I excelled at a team sport/on the first team. I enjoyed the sport, enjoyed the team. Never had a post exercise rush.

I still do it six days a week but like everyone else it’s so that I can bend/keep mobile and eat what I want to.

Yes that must be it! I will be very pleased with myself, I’m just so fit that endorphins don’t affect me anymore 😂

I always think it’s because I’m so UNfit! That I just can’t access the endorphins and maybe if I could run a bit faster I’d get them!

I hope that's the case and you manage to get there!!
I'm in awe of everyone who doesn't get the high but still does the exercise just because it's good for you 🏆

I never have done, hate every minute and feel so drained afterwards I often have a nap. I really struggle to do any form of exercise except walking to where I need to go and swimming and I'm pretty bad at swimming as try as I might I can't do the breathing.
I've done the get up and put work out stuff on and just end up sitting in my gym gear reading, staring into space or just going for a walk with my headphones in because running is so awful.

If you hate running don't run. Try weights. It's completely different. Or Pilates. Or Zumba. Just something

SD1978 · 01/04/2023 12:41

Nope. And I think it's why some people don't/ can't stick with it.I have never, ever felt 'good' from doing expertise, ever. And at one point was doing triathaloms and regular x5 weekly gym trips- so I'm not a I tried it once and didn't like it. I have never, ever, had any pleasure or satisfaction from it. I can objectively understand how,it's helpful- better health but it is done as a chore with no pleasure. I also think it should be talked about and acknowledged more that it doesn't do that for everyone, and sometimes, you have to accept you're doing it for health reasons, but will never, ever enjoy it

FrankColumbo · 01/04/2023 12:47

You were managing to do triathlons without ever enjoying them, @SD1978 ?

You must have amazing mental strength!

Maybe I will! To be fair I’ve been doing it years and have improved quite a bit so I just think I’m not built that way. But I do enjoy feeling fitter and have lost weight etc. So there are benefits. Sometimes I agree with the pp who said it might be better to tell people ‘you might never actually get a rush. You might never enjoy it, but it’s necessary if you want to be healthy.’ Then people don’t feel so disappointed.

gwenneh · 01/04/2023 12:55

Definitely not, which is why I don't go to the gym. I participate in an active hobby instead - still no rush, but it's something I enjoy far, far more and I don't resent spending my time doing it.

OneCup · 01/04/2023 12:57

I feel it has more effect on me when exercising outdoors

littleredcrab · 01/04/2023 12:58

@mybeautifuloak
I've tried loads and hated most of those too.
Pilates was tolerable but the instructor moved away and haven't been able to find another class which was the same.
Maybe weights but I've no idea where to start, and I've wasted so much money in unused gym membership in the past I'm reluctant to try another one.

BogRollBOGOF · 01/04/2023 13:19

I do get it, but not every time. What's amazing is when it kicks in during a run, most likely between miles 4-7 when I'm warmed up, in flow and not knackered yet, but that's certainly not every run, and some runs can be mental and physical feats of endurance. Most are somewhere between the two, and I generally feel good after, if temporarily knackered.

It's mainly running that does it, especially when running somewhere mentally pleasing. Open water swimming is my other big buzz. I do feel better for doing other sessions though.

BitOutOfPractice · 01/04/2023 13:23

Nope. The best part of exercise is stopping! Loathe it. Do it because I know I should.

I guess it goes give me a sense of well-being (park life!) but no rush sadly.

bellac11 · 01/04/2023 13:26

No Im afraid I dont

I often feel like crying, upset, exhausted, dizzy, angry.

I actually dont think exercise is good for me

SD1978 · 01/04/2023 13:55

@FrankColumbo - only a couple, wasn't a long term thing! I did it because I could, not because I enjoyed it!

heyyellowyellow · 01/04/2023 14:03

I do, but it has to be running and it has to be outside - I think the "high" comes from the really deep breathing and the oxygen pumping to muscles. I think too, the idea of a high might be a bit subjective? I feel good, a feeling of contentment and accomplishment, it's a warm feeling and tends to stay with me for a good few hours afterwards, for me, that’s the high.

lljkk · 01/04/2023 14:07

Not a rush, but more like a general feeling of wellbeing, boosted mood.

RayKray · 01/04/2023 16:54

I never got it until I found weights. Now I totally do and am addicted to it. So for me it's very dependent on what exercise.
