They are among the 5 England competitors, the third woman is Katie Wright and the men are Damian Hall are Tom Hollins

24 competitors this year.

Keith is doing a brilliant commentary on Twitter (@ KeithDunn) Seven runners didn't make the cut off for finishing loop 1 (at least one because she got lost)

For those who don't know, this is a brutal and idiosyncratic trail ultramarathon - extremely rough terrain, no GPS watches allowed, course is not marked and runners get instructions on the day and then have to find their way.

Anyone else following it this year?

I'm finding it oddly fascinating! It's the sort of running I wish I could do, but know I never will

Love how running brings people together..even here on Mumsnet it seems! I often crew for my husband on these crazy ultras, and am always buzzing from the sense of family between the crews and runners themselves..see you out there!! x

That story is amazing. Also - going to sleep in a muddy tyre track. A. How hardcore and B. How exhausted do you have to be to know you’ll still be able to sleep there?!

I did laugh at that story when I read it.

It is very John Kelly.

There was a great anecdote of his Pennine Way record run - a bewildered camper in his one man tent was asked if he minded if he borrowed it for half an hour and he crawled in and went to sleep with his muddy shoes sticking out of the end.

Jamil Coury was allowed to film it a few years ago. The first loop looks quite jolly when they're in a group. Obviously it becomes considerably less jolly as the miles and weather kick in.

I know, I just adore the thought of a befuddled Damien Hall leaving bits of biscuit at the top of a mountain as proof he was there 😂 I have never met any of these people, but I find that I like them all very much indeed 😊
