New Balance for overpronators?

Trickedbyadoughnut · 14/03/2023 13:52

I have just replaced an ancient pair of New Balance trainers (estimated to have lived with me since 2016, oops - in my defence I mainly run on trails), with NB Prisms. I like them, they feel good, but I think my right foot is still pronating a bit more than I want in them and I now see they are described as having lighter support. Anyone run in any other NB shoes that offer more stability?

Of course I could change brands, but have had Ascics (very hard, hurt my knees), Mizuno (not enough support), Nike and Addidas (hurt my heels), so I think I may be the Goldilocks of running. I do wonder about Hokas.

I promise I will go to a place with a treadmill to try them on this time 😬

I have Hoka which I love. They offer shoes with different levels of stability. Have you tried those?

WalterWexler · 14/03/2023 14:06

Sorry, just re-read. Definitely try Hoka if you haven't. They can be returned in 30days if they don't suit you (don't work for them- honest!)

ItsRainingPens · 14/03/2023 14:18

In new balance, try the 860. They're now on version 13, I believe. I've had them since version 5 or so

Trickedbyadoughnut · 14/03/2023 14:21

There is a stockist quite near me, but someone had told me they don't have a treadmill for testing them, but I really should call and ask them. Annoyingly, nowhere seems to have both NB and Hoka!

I had the new balance 860 but they’re a road shoe not trail. If you want trail or something more hybrid have a look at the Brooks Cascadia or the La Sportivas (they size up very small)

IWantToBeACat · 14/03/2023 19:25

Have you tried Brooks? Adrenaline (the GT are great for trail running) and Ghost are both good for overpronation.

They also have a shoe finder:

CMOTDibbler · 14/03/2023 19:31

I've never found enough control in NB. I used to use Hoka, but moved to On which suit me much better overall

scaredysquiggle · 14/03/2023 19:32

Another vote for On

Peekingovertheparapet · 14/03/2023 19:37

I’m an overpronator and wear Mizuno wave inspire. I’ve tried so many others over the years and keep coming back.

I do quite like Brooks too but not the ghost, that is a neutral shoe.

massistar · 14/03/2023 19:42

I was always an Asics girl but a physio recommended Saucony Omni to me and I've been really impressed. They're very supportive.

Snowite · 14/03/2023 20:01

Saucony Omni are the best for me. Brookes Adrenaline a close second. I've gone through 3 pairs of each!

Trickedbyadoughnut · 15/03/2023 10:17

OK, I have found somewhere with a running track that does Hokas. They also have the Saucony and Brooks mentioned, neither of which I've tried. They have NB 860s and On too, which I ran my first half with and I don't think were ideal for me, but it was in the dim and distance past right when they started, so I know they've changed a lot.

I realise I wasn't very clear, but it's my road shoes I'm looking to replace: I am pretty low mileage on the roads, but still - seven year old shoes are not a good idea!

Thanks for the suggestions all, I find buying running shoes so difficult so your recommendations are really helping me narrow things down.

I'm overweight and currently unfit (broke my hand in Jan) and get initimidated by the patronising men who are doing the fittings and end up panic-buying whatever they tell me to get, sometimes against my better judgment 🙄

And meant to say, I had the Mizuno Wave Inspire and liked a lot about it, but I think in the end, because I am heavy even when I am fitted, it just wasn't quite cushioned enough.

I am
An overpronator and find Brooks Adrenaline very good,

rookiemere · 15/03/2023 10:22

I didn't like the Hokas when I tried them not supportive enough for me.

ArabeI · 15/03/2023 10:32

Also would recommend the Brooks. I have three pairs now; though for running my problem is high arches and supination, but they have shoes to suit over pronation.

Rollercoaster1920 · 15/03/2023 10:44

New balance have lovely wide toe box shapes so be wary using other brands that fit differently.
The numbers are confusing, I've been looking for more stability than the 1080s and found this explanation:

Good luck.

Oh, that is interesting, I have always been confused by the New Balance numbers!

@Rollercoaster1920

That link is so helpful. Thank you! I was trying to work out which New Balance to get yesterday. In the olden days the website would filter down to trainers for overpronation but they seem to have removed this facility.

MistySkiesAreGone · 16/03/2023 01:06

GTS Brooks. I had my gait analysed and these are good for over pronation. They were recommended in store. Even an old model is good.

MistySkiesAreGone · 16/03/2023 01:07

I think NB suit neutral gaits better.

Relaxd · 16/03/2023 02:13

I’m in asics nimbus and they are really cushioned. Perhaps depends on the model you’re wearing not just the brand. I’ve tried Saucony and also pretty soft.

WuTangGran · 16/03/2023 02:29

Another Mizuno Wave Inspire fan here. I’m an overpronator and used to love New Balance 807s until they were discontinued.

Peekingovertheparapet · 16/03/2023 07:48

It’s so difficult. Last time I had shoes fitted on the treadmill they put me in ASICS gel kayano. Which were textbook on the treadmill, however I ran once in them and pulled a hamstring. And so I switched to just walking in them and again arse pain within minutes. I don’t always rate the treadmill answer tbh

Yes, my knee started hurting about 10k into my Asics, ran for a few weeks with it, then the pain went away with my old shoes on. They seemed great in the shop and lots of friends have them and love them. It's so hard to find shoes, I really struggle.

I think the NB Prisms will be really good for some short runs and if I do a road 10k, but I really think I need to mix up with something that corrects my arch collapse a bit more.
