50K walk - footwear advice

Hello!

I'm after some advice on the best footwear for a 50K hike across the North Downs in Surrey I'm doing in July.

I'm used to walking 20K distances regularly and have a training plan so not too worried about that part.

I currently have a pair of Brooks walking trainers that are lightweight and been good but they're at the end of their life now, so looking for something similar that will withstand a 50K and support me.

Any advice from seasoned long distance walkers would be very welcome!

Trail running shoes would be good for dry conditions. They have the grip of a walking shoe but are light which helps with fatigue.

I love my ASICS Gel Odysseys - these are the new ones but the old model are still available discounted.

However they're not the lightest.

I'd go to a good orthopaedic shop and try on a few pairs that they recommend, get properly fitted.

Another pair of Brooks walking trainers?

The main thing whatever the shoe is, is that they are well worn in, that way they are moulded to your foot shape. With long distances fluids accumulate in your feet and hands, so your feet will swell. Having a bit of space for this, or being prepared to loosen your laces is important. Toes particularly swell, and then start to rub against each other.

Hands are easier to deal with. Every so often swing your arms around for a bit like you were swimming.

Thanks all. Glad that trail running shoes seem the best suggestion as the ones I have are light and have served me well.

Keen to make sure doing a full 50k in them, that they're the best option.

Walk not until July so reckon if I get them in the next month, that'll be ok.

Will definitely head to a pod shoe shop to try a few on and make sure I have decent socks too.

Have a look at Injini toe socks - I now only wear these for my longer runs

Each toe being enclosed mean they don't rub against each other

They do feel a bit weird at first - but worth trying on your training walks

@Chocolateteabag, thank you! They look great. Will definitely give them a go and see how I get on.
